By Reciprocality, let it be noted, is here meant Man's Power of joining himself on his Part with the Lord. There is no other Word in our Lan guage to exprefs this Power, and yet there is great Need of fuch a Word, inasmuch as it is very plain from Holy Scripture, that Man poffeffes fuch a Power, and that it is the Lord's continual Gift to him for Salvation. The Doctrine concerning Reception and Reciprocality, as here afferted by our Author, is of the greatest Importance, and demands the most serious Attention of the Chriftian Reader.

also teaches in these Words, "C If ye abide in Me, and my Words abide in you; if ye keep my Commandments, ye shall abide in my Love," John xv. 7, 10. "He that hath my Commandments, and doeth them, be it is that loveth Me, and I will love him, and will make my Abode with him," John xiv. 21, 23; thus the Lord dwells in his own with Man, and Man in those Things which are from the Lord, and thus in the Lord.

103. Inafmuch as there is with Man from the Lord this Reciprocality, and Power of Application on his Part, and confequent mutual Tendency to Conjunction, therefore the Lord faith, that Man fhould do the Work of Repentance, which no one can do but as from himself; Jefus faid, except ye do the Work of Repentance, ye shall all perish," Luke xiii. 3, "Jefus faid, the Kingdom of God is at Hand, do the Work of Repentance, and beTieve the Gospel," Mark i. 14, 15. 104. Inafmuch as there is with Man from the Lord this Reciprocality, and Power of Application on his Part, and confequent mutual Tendency to Conjunction, therefore the Lord enjoins, that Man fhould do the Commandments, and fhould bring forth Fruits, as in these Words, " Why call ye Me Lord, Lord, and do not what I say?" Matt. iii. 8. "Make the Tree good and it's Fruit good," Matt. xii. 33. "The Kingdom fhall be given to a Nation bringing forth the Fruits thereof," Matt. xxi. 43. "Every Tree which beareth not good Fruit, is cut down and caft into the Fire," Matt. vii. 19; not to mention many other Paffages to the fame Purport; from which it is evident, that Man ought to do Good from himself, but by the Lord's Power, which he should implore; and this is to do Good as of himself.

105. Inafmuch as there is with Man from the Lord this Reciprocality, and Power of Application on his Part, and confequent mutual Tendency to Conjunction, therefore Man is to render an Account of his Works, and to be recompenfed according thereto; for the Lord faith, "The Son of Man shall come, and render to every one according to his Deeds," Matt. xvi. 27. They who have done Good shall come forth to the Refurrection of Life, and

they who have done Evil to the Refurrection of Judgment," John v. 22. "Their Works follow with them," Rev. xiv. 13.

"All

were judged according to their Works," Rev. xx. 13. "Behold I come, and my Reward is with Me, that I may give to every one according to his Works," Rev. xxii. 12. If there was no Reciprocality with Man, there would be no Imputation.

106. Inafmuch as Reception and Reciprocality are with Man, therefore the Church teaches, that Man fhould examine himself, should confefs his Sins before God, should defist from them, and should lead a new Life: That this is taught by every Church in Christendom, may be feen above, n. 3 to 8.

107. In Cafe Man had no Faculty of Reception, and at the fame Time of thinking as from himself, Nothing could have been faid in Regard to Faith, for neither is Faith from Man: Without fuch Faculty
