been liable to changes introduced by refinements. The employment of grinding with these mills is confined solely to females."

Our young friends must also read of what the same traveller reports of his visit to Nazareth :Scarcely had we reached the apartment prepared for our reception, when looking from the window into the court-yard belonging to the house, we beheld two women grinding at the mill. They were preparing flour to make our bread, as it is always customary, in this country, when strangers arrive. The two women seated on the ground, opposite to each other, held between them too flat stones. In the centre of the upper stone was a cavity for pouring in the corn; and, by the side of this, an upright wooden handle, for moving the

stone. As the operation began, one of the women, with her right hand, pushed this handle to the woman opposite, who again sent it to her companion; thus communicating a rotatory and very rapid motion to the upper stone; their left hands being all the while employed in supplying fresh corn, as fast as the bran and flour escaped from the sides of the machine."

PROTESTANT CATECHISM.

Q. 15. WHAT meaning do Roman Catholics attach to the word "Church?"

A. They define the Church to be a visible company of men, possessing the same faith, and acknowledging the Bishop of Rome to be their chief Pastor, and the Vicar of Christ upon earth. Q. 16. By what name is the Bishop of Rome usually called?

4. He is generally known by the name of the Pope, a word which is derived from the Greek, signifying father. It was originally given as a title to all Bishops; but at the end of the eleventh century, Gregory VIII., in a large assembly held in Rome, ordered that the title should be given exclusively to the Bishop of Rome.

Q. 17. Where may a statement of the doctrines of the Church of Rome be found?

A. In the decrees of General Councils, but more especially in those of the Council of Trent, and in the creed of Pope Pius IV.

Q. 18. You have told me that Protestants are so

called because they protested against what they considered to be erroneous: now tell me what are the principal doctrines and practices of the Church of Rome to which Protestants are opposed?

A. I will. The assumption that the Church of Rome is exclusively the Church of Christ-the assertion that she is infallible-the Supremacy of the Pope-the Rule of Faith-the Restriction of the Scriptures-Image Worship-Invocation of Saints -Transubstantiation-the Sacrifice of the MassPurgatory-Prayers in an unknown tongueAuricular Confession-Absolution-Communion in one kind-Indulgences-and her Sentiments upon the doctrine of Justification.

FORCE OF STEAM.

A CIRCUMSTANCE occurred lately, rather of a singular nature, which strongly illustrates the powerful effects of steam. A strong stone bottle, half filled with water, and tightly corked, was placed by a servant girl in an oven, and forgotten. The water, of course, began to be converted into steam, by the heat of the oven, which burst the bottle, and was so expansive as to drive the oven door, which was of cast iron, from its hinges against the kitchen wall, with such violence that it was broken into several pieces. The oven itself, though of considerable weight, was carried from its seat, blew out both the kitchen windows, and tore down the fire-place. Several children were playing in the kitchen, but they providentially escaped injury.
