"THE Life and Extracts from the Writings of GERHARD TERSTEEGEN" having met with a very favourable reception from the religious public, so that a third edition has already appeared ; the Translator has been induced to think, that a further selection from his writings would also prove acceptable to his pious countrymen. He has accordingly furnished, in the following pages, a few of his printed discourses, which in Germany have survived a sixth edition, and partake greatly of the spirit of the previous work. These discourses-originally thirty in number -were taken down, as appears from his life, at the time when they were delivered, and being for the most part extemporaneous, particular beauty of style or methodical arrangement must not be expected from them. Their chief excellency will be found to consist in the spirit of deep and fervent piety which pervades them, |
