There is no word in Bibl. Hebr. for "true" (though there is JANI “faithful," cf. DN 7 Is. i. 26), so that if the prophet had wished to say "the true city" he could only have used the expression which he has here. But, on the other hand, there is an adj. "holy," so that had he meant to say "the true city, the holy mountain," he might have written instead of hár haqqódesh p7777.—LXX. Tódis

V.), shows that we cannot render the first yippāle "it be (or shall be) too marvellous" (LXX. ei áduvarýσel must, therefore, mean "if it was

too marvellous (see note on i. 5)." stands for comp. (1 Sam.

xxii. 7),

- “will he give to all of you?" (see also p. 35). Thus may be rendered "was it, therefore, too marvellous," or since the work was not then completed, it may mean "is it, therefore (or will it, therefore, be) too marvellous, &c." LXX. μn kaì évútióv μὴ ἐνώπιόν μου ἀδυνατήσει ;

y is the Prophetic Participle followed by the Perfect with vāv convers. vhebhethí, comp. p. 36. (Baer has accidentally omitted the Fixed Metheg with '.)—For v'shàc°nú LXX.

Jer. v. 13, comp. R. D. Qimchi's Introd. Poem to his Comm. on Pss.).— Hàhechal is in apposition with Béth YHVH: there is no need, with Hitzig, to regard it as a gloss.-"for the purpose of being built," i.e. when its foundations were laid for this purpose. LXX. give what they conceived to be the sense of the passage, and render freely ap' ǹs ἡμέρας τεθεμελίωται... καὶ ὁ ναὸς ἀφ ̓ οὗ ᾠκοδόμηται. There is no need to suppose that they read (see p. 3, last line).

Sācár "hire" is masc., and with it nìh'yáh agrees; but

attracted into the gender of 7 (see note on vi. 6).— Nih yah is the 3rd sing, Perf. masc. of (on the màaríc see Excurs. II. A. 7). The Niph. of this verb occurs only in the Perf. and Partic. It generally means "happened" (Judg. xix. 30), "was caused" (1 Kings xii. 24), "was undone," i. e. "went off" (of sleep, Dan. ii. 1), or (into a swoon, Dan. viii. 27). In Joel ii. 2 66 means was not," and so here. Observe that the tense of

is the correct reading (not '). Some of these cases, in which we have và when we should have expected và, may be explained as being the Imperf. of repeated action, as WN) (Judg. vi. 9) “and I kept driving them,” (xx. 6) ❝ and kept sending her” (comp.

Zech. vii. 14). But others anomalous vocalization as pieces,"

can only be explained as instances of NI (Judg. xx. 6) "and I cut her in

13 And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong.

14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not:

Cayyāmím hārìshōním denotes "as in the former days," since after a preposition is often understood, e.g. (Is. ix. 3)

as in the day of Midian."—" "I am," or as E. V. "I will be"; there is no need with LXX. to supply any such verb as Tol.-"for" introduces an assurance in proof of the statement of ver. 11. Zéra' hashshālóm “the seed [which flourishes only in times] of peace," viz. haggéphen "the vine." In Jer. ii. 21 the word zéra“ “seed" is used of p (see p. 12) in the expression no "genuine seed" (the xaλòv σтépμa of Matt. xiii. 24). For cí zéra' shalóm Syr. gives "for the seed shall be in peace." LXX. ảλλ' î Seíέw eipývnv, cí might possibly stand for (as in Gen. xxxi. 16 after a negative sentence); but here there is hardly sufficient contrast between the two sentences to justify this rendering. For they read possibly, Hiph. of y, which they render by deíkvuμ in Gen. xli. 39, &c.

(comp. i. 6) in the 1st pers. Perf. this verb occurs here only in its uncontracted form, and only in Jer. iv. 28 contracted 'pi.—V·ló nichámti “and I repented not,” LXX. kaì où μetevóŋσa, see p. 19.—' ' "I have again purposed,” comp. (Hos. v. 11)

also with the others. After εἰς χαρὰν is inserted καὶ εὐφρο σύνην, and after καὶ εἰς ἑορτὰς ἀγαθάς is inserted καὶ εὐφραν Onoeoe. The of vha méth, like the Arab. fa, denotes "therefore," comp. (Ezek. xviii. 32) "For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth... !! therefore repent ye and live." (The ↑ of v'àmartá (i. 3) might be so taken, as indeed it is by the E. V.) In such a case the is usually prefixed to the verb; but here the objects hà méth v'hashshālóm are put first for the sake of emphasis.
