characters to deal with? If we allow them invariably a living price, nothing better tends to insure all this in the very best pledge.

Self-interest, second to not even money power, is the world's first love, and that is to be primarily regarded. By taking nothing for granted, we may avoid deception of the many that live on the world, getting their living out of others, who are caused to take all for granted as right, till the object is accomplished, then no matter about the recompense.

We must not only master the points, but those who abuse the world by their acts, else any conservative revolution is vain, as it will be presumptive, when it cannot secure the wise tribunal of reason.

The world can be best managed by a wise independence, the glorious mentality, the most honorable competition.

Keep the world straight, and act independently of it. Hold it to exact justice. Dishonesty should not pervade in proper society, under under any forms that tricky lawyers originate.

Much is often said about false principles, but there can be no such thing, as God created principles, and all are true; it is man's appreciation of them, that presents a false position and appreciation.

It is false doctrines and their systems, not principles.

The great questions of the world absorb all, as matters of principle. Commercial enterprise is one of the great elements of rational education. Principles are the main points. There is a deep want of courtesy, frankness, in the world. The wisest application of mind is most highly essential. What is there in life that does not demand it most potently? In the purchase of property, the purchaser may pay all he has, and then has to yield up all purchased. Is this a proper use of mind? Is it a proper view of one's duty and action?

Many purchasers of lands and houses on credit have been sold out of all, and all their other property.

This is ambition, or folly overreached.

How many that are unprincipled, or destitute of intelligence, are incapable of appreciating courtesy. The world must meet, morally and physically, everything at once. It must understand what are its legitimate resources, and act accordingly. When things, as gifts, are put into hands, we ought to know the true conditions; not take for granted, and pay dearly therefor in the end.

Rational mind must look at all the contingencies before promising, and then employ its best capital in the substantial, not shadowy, pursuits. The uniform protection of the world's constituency and society, must be sustained on the inherent conservative principles of the universe. Manage the world by truth and facts. The world may look upon you as an adventurer, but act independently. Not only false faith, but false taste, has been engendered in the world. The way to appreciate the world, mind, God, religion, man, is to put all on their merits and principles. Look through your best optics, instead of others'.

Make it the best policy as interest to pay, and the honesty of many is secured. How can that be fully secured in the whole? That is the question with rational religion, that requires all rational minds to look to principles.

MERCHANTS.

Is it possible, that more than ninety per cent. of merchants fail, in some of the most respectable cities? Is competition too great, or is it that their system is deficient?

One of the most important matters with merchants is the proper care of all interests, as well as principles.

The speediest sales will insure best profits, or, are generally the best. The interest of the value of goods unsold for years, is to be deeply considered; the expenditures are another matter of deep interest.

What can prevent many merchants failing, or becoming bankrupt, when they fail essentially in principle and judgment?

What must be the state of morals in that country, that sees its merchants become smugglers?

Those possessed of business capacity may succeed, under proper circumstances, with proper exertions, and a wise prudence or use of mind, in honorable living.

A good and proper sense economy with merchants is worth more than half of all the profits on their merchandize, to save them from bankruptcy.

Merchants suffer by reckless competition, that ruins all parties, or does but little good; and above all, by an improper, "inconsiderate extension of credit.

To have others' debts to pay, and to be cut off from collections of one's own, by assignment, &c., should be prevented by a bankrupt law, that, if permanently good, would do away with the abuses of the credit system.

Bad men embarrass the rightful action of any good system.

Merchants should particularly regard the interest of idle capital, that might reimburse for subsequent losses, if available. Re-invest capital constantly and speedily, without permitting it to be idle or dead. Co-partnerships are very important in the affairs of life, and should be formed on the proper business principles, and no other. Persons entering old firms have been ruined by their bankruptcy, that was totally unknown to the last party, until too late.

In all business transactions the party should premise his own perfect safety, and take nothing at all for granted, neither trusting to the opinion of others that may be ignorant, or their integrity, that may be deficient in the time of need. Deal in such a way that none can be injured, and all may have the best chance for benefit.

The world has to notice, even for health, that good be not adulterated, mixed, or injured. In keeping yourself straight, you will do your part in seeking to keep the world so. What shall we say of the merchants who have two prices? That they are unworthy of public support. They must have uniform prices. The highest integrity bespeaks that.

When a messenger is sent to a merchant, for any quantity of goods, wares, or merchandize, why cannot exact justice be done his fellow citizen, as if in his own presence?

The merchant who sells on credit must be sure that he sells to those competent to pay. If the goods be gone without the money, and if the money be gone without valid titles, your experience does not avail anything against the collusion. We cannot trust some people at all, unless we have them bound by interest.

Buy for cash, then you trade independently and with dignity, otherwise you buy at a great disadvantage. The merchant who exceeds his income, cannot be free from bankruptcy.

A miserable state of world-morals exists, where much of the trading community seek to use the greatest extortions on the ignorant world, in proportion to its ignorance. None should pledge, as merchants, the quality of their goods, if they do not hold themselves responsible therefor. Honorable men will hold them responsible in their mind's eye.

This article refers to what is trade, and comprehends the view that is too often unfortunately embraced in speculation, that if recklessly abused, uses up not only the principal, but affects deeply his securities and aiders. The world is advancing rationally to the position of supervising all departments of self-preservation, that bespeaks the guarantee of best world morals and safety.

Too great calculations are too often made by the world, in future anticipations. Commerce is one of the best practical teachers, and all its regulations must be rationally regarded. Proper inspection laws for health and security of honesty, even to teas, should be carried out.

Purchasers should have the best supervision of qualities of goods, but should pay a living price.

Inferior prices beget inferior goods.

Who can be more useful than a liberal and enlightened merchant?

THE RIGHT USE OF TIME AND CAPITAL.

TIME, well employed, flies swiftly enough; but what shall we do when it hangs heavily on us, with nothing to do? Really, then, employ the whole time in thinking of some thing to be realized, to be done, and when you attain it, proceed at once to put it into successful operation. We do not stand still at nothing.

Our function is valuable employment of time, profitably and dutifully.

The negative of good is evil, by omission as well as by commission. We should seek more wisdom to-day than we possessed yesterday, a fact identified with constant suitable employment of time.

Better had we left many things undone, and known less of other things.

Repentance bespeaks improvement, as conviction and correction will follow on knowledge and the right appreciation of duty. All right-minded individuals may acquiesce in what is best principles, presented at the right time; and the only thing

that prevents full success of morals, all the time of life, is the tyranny of habit, a sec ond nature."

Education, if rational and correct, as it is absolutely essential for pilotage through life, will be the best guarantee, at the right time, of all that is necessary.

When our thoughts get into an improper, uncontrollable current, from vacancy of time, we should strive to do the best actions, something good, at once, as the best prayer at that moment to Almighty God, to arrest them best by this very exclusion.

All mankind, men, women and children, of suitable age, no matter how rich they all are, should use out-door daily exercises,-do something to do right to a proper and necessary extent, for employment of time too. Proper labor is a part component of man's existence.

Most do not employ that time assumed to be employed.

We should never keep capital, mental nor pecuniary, idle; both, when active, best contribute to our best independence and the world's benefit.

Insurances of life's benefits can be obtained by the proper use of time's functions. As insurance policies are lost by delay and want of good faith, so may the soul's noblest birth-rights.

Self-examination will show time too much misspent or misapplied.

Economy of time and capital, talents and labor, is a noble characteristic, and may be productive of most essential, universal advantages.

Economy, if just, is one of the best to all, and should never be too close nor extravagant. What is economy in some-as, when travelling, sleeping where they best can, eating from their own stock, most commendably-is niggardliness in others, and de-prives a useful portion of the community what is due them for public spirit of accommodation.

The public should always justly respond to all just demands upon it.

The world should seek to help sustain the proper institutions of refined civilization. Extravagance in families may eat up all, principal and interest, the whole capital. The end may be bad. A just liberality may lay a proper foundation in life. Industry and economy are the great talismans to man's temporal happiness.

Mark the benefits of true economy, without mistake. A single man is, apparently, the proper guardian of his own property; and if he fool it away, then he has none to blame but himself. Yet how awful that censure when he throws himself on friends for support. Let him not condemn the world therefor, but act wisely. The married man is not the exclusive owner of his property, and is responsible to his family.

INDUSTRIAL LABOR.

THIS is one of the most honorable cements of society. No age and country can claim a higher grade in civilization, all other matters being equal, than those that exhibit the appropriate use of the elements of industry and labor; and no country can be more blessed than that which rewards suitably all such exertions. Both sexes ought to work, or do something equivalent, or their minds may mature evil thoughts, in idle moments, and their bodies engentler disease, without the conservation of labor to throw off noxicus obstructions.

Governments should give adequate aid to industrial labor, as the means of attainment of dignity, to prevent crime and dissipation. Nothing is so menial as debasement from the effects of non-employment in industrial pursuits. Not only does the race of mankind, but especially women, require good raising of good families, but a continuance of proper labor.

All worthy employments of industry should be equalized as near as possible, and should not have to brook the affectation on a superior footing.

Let all communities, large cities especially, have best general regulations, for all persons competent to the exercise of labor, to have visible and substantial means of subsistence.

The work of honest minds should render them a living. To render the most efficient aid to the industrious-minded or the necessitous, in the absence of governmental grants of land, hereafter to be discussed, large city corporations should remove them to rural districts, that all needing support to be thus benefited.

Free, intelligent minds, must appreciate all such. The union of the good must counteract the bad. No part of professions or labor is to be in disproportion to the whole population, as the agricultural may exceed the mechanics, and an excess of produce may have no suitable market.

There should be industrial exhibitions, as the world has to sustain working associa

tions that should be most elevated, to do away with the apparent necessity of socialism, that may generate many vicious elements. The elements of true enjoyment of life have been dispensed by an all-wise Creator, and must be elicited by the beneficial intercourse of the people for universal amelioration. A proper government sustains all the practicable elements of industrial labor of the free. So much grain is raised in some countries, as wheat in Russia, that much of it has been wasted or destroyed. This seems so much for man's bad management, and improvident government. To remedy all this, tariffs of appropriate revenue character should be adjusted, to bring the consumer by the side of the producer, and equalize in the best manner all industrial labor exertions. Such tariff is best to promote the highest national morals, in preventing smuggling, immorality and dishonesty, by taking away the most formidable means of mind perversion.

The world should patronize the policy that causes the best exertion of labor-that bestows its beneficial blessings on each individual of the world, and overcomes most. justly the antagonizing conflicts of particular countries. But let the wisest policies regulate themselves. This is the only wise system to obviate, by the most powerful inherent means, all antagonism. The world has been taught enough to know this. Labor and capital, in a properly organized government, produce a fair organization of society. Monopolies of trade, by government, must be abolished, to do justice to the rights of the sovereign people. The world should have a proper organization of suitable materials, and that position should embrace all the industrial pursuits of agriculture, commerce, navigation, manufactures, mining and fishing. An appropriate industrial equilibrium should be aimed at over the world.

Mind in all its proper facilities will best regulate all such, under the appropriate limitations. What an advance on the errors of the past-now one can count it an honor to have risen by one's own exertions.

We must analyze the position of nations, and see the relative state of their classes, especially landlords and tenantry. This order has to be abolished, by organic conservative principles of the universe.

The world must guard against pauperizing any of mankind.

The necessitous class must be sustained by agricultural labor principally, and that on its best position, the fee-simple of nature. It must go to that kind of labor to elevate it, and the whole community. The question does arise in patriotic minds, to extinguish as early as practicable, the very name of classes and castes, as odious to universal brotherhood? But analysis tells us that many classes are uncaste or made so by vicious habits and customs, often by the poison of alcohol, that affects awfully their whole system, the nerves especially and vital organs, as the liver.

Many are the evils that mind perverted makes out of what was good. They that abide by law so closely, as to wait for all to be decided by lawsuits before even payments of debts, may find themselves in this class. While industry and economy will counteract much of their miseries, an intellectual policy will institute a better position. Mind may be wanting to many, but the proper exercise is neglected by most,

But does the citizen show himself any way a worthy member of society, competent in skill, honest in intention? Let him persevere, and let good citizens aid him, above all, the government, in giving him the surest foundation, a homestead.

Labor ought not to be more than ten hours, temperate at that, in the twenty-four, to give time for daily reading, improvement of mind and recreation.

Many of those most necessitous in cities, may make not only a comfortable but even a genteel living in the country, if placed on their own resources, aided by the amount necessarily expended in cities for their mere existence. It well becomes the community to observe all this subject, and act accordingly. The time may come for the world, when labor may be acknowledged as affording her just share of its benefits, and competent to tell the tale of her own powers. Industrial labor makes nations, the whole world.

The industrious and honest classes will protect themselves almost anywhere; the reverse cannot securely be protected by the wisest laws, that can only promote, not create welfare of the world. It is a deep reflection personally, not to be able to rise by labor in America, from destitution of the actual necessaries of life, when men possess all the healthful vigor of life. What will insure proper employment for labor? Suitable prices. It may be important to institute all expedient organizations of saving institutions and industrial associations. The world should think of a permanent fund, to be raised by all civilized nations, to promote the alleviation of human misery, or the advantages of society. Organic constitutional rights, must first be instituted.

SOCIALISM.

ALL segregated socialism is founded on improper analysis of mind, on the pretence to equalize man, who varies with diversified talents and constitutional characteristics. If you restore to-day the affected equilibrium of property, from the diversity of financial talents, you would speedily see the resulting inequality.

There cannot possibly be any antagonism of society founded on equitable relations, adverse to the general good. In the great principles of the universe that govern the equilibrium of the planetary bodies, attraction balances repulsion, and the whole is concert of action that is universally harmonized.

Proper and honest sense advises to look eternally at the nature of things, not to our mere wishes or crude opinions. There can be no fanciful Utopia in society, that is necessarily made up of various elements, varied by their several intellectual, moral, physical, contingent and local circumstances, which if arbitrarily equalized by immediate legislation of brute force, must from the very nature of creation be modified by time, and characterized by its eternal revolution among nations, and individuals of those nations.

Her thousand operations by "flood and field,” if no other of life's fund was exhibited, meet most fully this interesting question, and cannot fail to satisfy the mind of the philosophic inquirer, of the futility of reaching the solution in any other way, than what nature wills, under the direction of its mighty regulator.

Mind is unsettled by the agitation of unattainable solutions. As the construction, the organization of every person varies enough to characterize the individual, the character of the creation cannot be reduced to his or her subjection, but by principles that recognise that position and that variety.

The world furnishes one great and glorious socialism, only to be realized from rational religion proclaimed in indefinite series in all man's legitimate actions, superior in beauty and loveliness in its world-wide sphere, to any arbitrary arrangement that gratifies man's power, ambition and avarice.

What can governments do, rightly and properly for citizens? They can only put their rights under equal and just protection, else all is union of state and peculiar power, a tyranny and oppression.

The mighty blessings of a consistent government enlightened and free, protect with suitable potency, all classes of citizens. Such government is separate from all but intrinsic power, its own merits, unconnected to all church, bank, money, working people's, all peculiar, social, but the whole rights of the people exclusively, her intrinsic power.

This consistent free government permits only wise legislation, exclusive of pretences to primogeniture, to elevate the accident of birth over the equal rights of many, thus reversing the order of nature that is universal, not peculiar in common rights, beneficial to all, and oppressive to none.

This principle upholds all, but depresses none with crushed spirits. The establishment of the law of primogeniture, is the suppression of free government, causing republicanism to perish.

A state-faith can never be a rational religion, suitable for rationable beings-clearly so. Religion must furnish liberal principles as an institution of mind, not of government, altogether incompatible with other alliances than people's rights.

Religion asks no tithes of the most, to the inconvenience of justice, of home in many instances. Religion does not belong to any circle, and does not permit the destitute, disabled by disease, by imbecility and incapacity, from realizing the state contributions.

Military and naval impressments, when made, are at the expense of popular rights, that guarantee all employments a sufficient payment to insure their prosecution, unless as the least of evils, in cases of necessary and defensive wars.

Good governments seek no wars without principle, and sustain no debts without reason satisfactory to those that pay them, consequently their citizen soldiers ought to be volunteers for all righteous defence. But soldiers and sailors are necessary for a peace establishment, therefore their enlistment should be secured on the prices of competition and rational treatment.

The result of good government is natural and consistent. The world is to be governed on conservative principles, and no other; then let reason legislate.

Deity's attributes will be understood by mind, that seeks to approach the performance of duty.

Having all fundamental points of society right, things must regulate themselves. Legislation is founded on principles that must not be transcended, for if they clash, all
