JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL.

Riverside Edition.

With Notes and Portraits. In ten volumes, crown 8vo, gilt top each, $1.50; the set, 10 vols., $15.00; half calf, $27.50;

balf calf, gilt top, $30,00; half levant, $40.00.

MESSRS. HOUGHTON, MIFFLIN & CO. take pleasure in announcing the publica tion of an entirely new and complete Riverside Edition of the Writings of JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL. These have been rearranged by Mr. Lowell, and appear in volumes not bearing the titles by which his works have hitherto been known, but with titles suggested by the new classification.

LITERARY ESSAYS, in four volumes.
POLITICAL ESSAYS, in one volume.

LITERARY AND POLITICAL ADDRESSES,
in one volume.

POEMS, in four volumes.

These comprise all of Mr. Lowell's writings up to date which he wishes to preserve, and include several addresses, etc., not contained in his volumes hitherto published. All the volumes, both of prose and poetry, have been carefully revised by Mr. Lowell. Thus his writings in this issue bear the form which he regards as final, and which for the future will represent his definitive contribution to the world's literature. Of the variety and value of this contribution it is unnecessary to speak. The editions contain a full index to the prose writings, and the last volume of poetry gives a table of first lines of all the poems. Its paper, press work, and every mechanical detail are as perfect as the Riverside Press can produce. The form is that of the Riverside Editions of Longfellow's and Whittier's Works.

PROSE WORKS. New Riverside Edition. 6 vols. crown 8vo, gilt top, $9.00; balf calf, $16.50; balf calf, gilt top, $18.00; balf levant, $24.00.

The Author of this book, Alice Mabel Bacon, has had special opportunities of studying Fapanese life from the point of view of the most cultivated Japanese women, as she has lived in Japan and been intimate with many Japanese ladies of position. Her book is divided into chapters upon

Education.

Marriage and Divorce.

Wife and Mother.

Old Age.

Court Life.

Life in Castle and Yashiki.

Samurai Women.

Peasant Women.

Life in the Cities.

Domestic Service.
Epilogue.

Those who have the progress and ennobling of women at heart," says a critic, "will find much food for serious reflection in this charming volume, whose author has given many a suggestion which would seem to be an invaluable aid to the elevation of the Japanese. Picturesque, touching, and instructive is Fapanese Girls and Women. But those who read the volume merely for amusement will find it a lively and cleverly written "inside view" of the life of the women of Japan by a woman of the world.

ST. PAUL

From her papers and the letters written by her, and preserved by the recipients, Mr. Tiffany has constructed what, in view of the attendant difficulties, must be regarded as a remarkably good and satisfactory life of her.... It was a wonderful career; and many will lay down this well-written and sympathetic biography agreeing with the conclusion of one of her friends, who, in communicating her death, declared Dorothea Lynde Dix the "most useful and distinguished woman America has yet produced."

Mr. Tiffany has done his work as biographer with judgment, and he has brought to it an admiration of the character and labors of Miss Dix which makes his pages glow with feeling. A memorial such as this was much needed. It is the last and best token of remembrance and respect for a fair life that can be paid; and it is matter of congratulation that the work is thoroughly and well done.

Mr. Tiffany has narrated this moving story with skill and appreciation. His book should be read by all who thus would yield tribute to a singularly noble life. In all the details of that life the great satisfaction is that its nobility of purpose was so uniformly a purpose animated by wisdom and crowned with enduring success.

The book must have a permanent place as a record of a wonderful life. . . . The reading public on both PIONEER PRESS. sides of the sea owe a debt of gratitude to the man who has given so clear and glowing account of her work.

The quality of her friends speaks volumes as to her personality. Mr. Tiffany has written a sympathetic and interesting memorial, and has shown excellent taste in all matters.

A book of absorbing interest and of genuine helpfulness, by virtue of its lessons in the power of patience and persistence and dauntless courage.
