The following list of contents, an help now supplied for the first time with one of these letters, may be useful to some readers in premonishing them of its subject, as the same on a larger scale has been to the author in digesting it, and will be no great incumbrance perhaps to others. In so vast a variety of tastes and capacities as necessarily attend on the common interest here presented, one finds it impossible to suit every one's expectation, and much easier to consult their average than their majority,—as it is also fitter to be consulted. For the average expectation is in general what constitutes propriety, or the GOLDEN MEAN, what may be consulted any time by those who are addicted to it, and what the author has consulted accordingly-as on other occasions, so now likewise in the quantum both of helps and materials, to the best of bis judgment, here provided.
