it may be proper enough to ufe that Word, unlefs Men will needlefly wrangle about Words.' But from the fame Premifes he might much better have argued for omitting that Term; for fince the Scripture does not use it, but fully expreffes the Doctrine of Remiffion in other Terms, the Impofingthat Word is a prefumptuous Addition to the Text, and altogether unneceffary, unless Men are minded to exalt themfelves, by preferring their own Mode of Expreffion to fuch as the Holy Ghoft has thought fit to use.

If our Opponent's next three Queries, p. 138, 139. be not well grounded, he has notably fecured himself from Detection. By the Marginal Letters W. P. it may be fuppofed he intends William Penn, but he neither refers to Page nor Book. To avoid therefore the unreasonable Labour of reading all that Author's Works, feveral hundred Sheets in Folio, in search of what perhaps may not be there, we must be content to leave our Adverfary Sleeping in his Intrenchments,

HE seems to acknowledge, p. 140. Some of the Quakers owning, that the Obedience, Death and Sufferings of Chrift, in the Flesh, is that whereby Remiffion of Sins that are part is obtain'd.' And adds, I wish they would all do fo. In which we think he has his Defire, nor do we find in their Writings any Thing contradictory thereto. But that our Reader may clearly fee that they have a true Seripture Notion of Juftification, we tranfcribe the following Declaration.

(a) I MUST again declare, that we are led by the Light and Spirit of Chrift, with holy Reverence to confefs unto the Blood of Chrift bed at Jerufalem, as that by which a Propitiation C was held forth to the Remiffion of Sins that were Paft through the Forbearance of God unto all that believed: And we do embrace it as fuch: and do firmly believe, that thereby God declared his great Love to the World, for by it is the Confcioufnefs of Sin declared to be taken away, or Remiffion fealed to all that have known true Repentance and Faith in his Appearance. But because of the Conditions, I mean Faith and Repentance, therefore do we exhort all to turn their Minds to the Light and Spirit of Chrift within, that by feeing their • Conditions, and being by the fame brought botb into true Contrition and holy Confidence in God's Mercy, they may come to receive the Benefit thereof, for without that neceffary Condition, it • will be impoffible to obtain Remiffion of Sins, though it be fo generally promulgated thereby. To conclude; As in my Anfwer at large, fo here in fhort, I fay, Juftification may be taken in a two fold Senfe; Compleatly ⚫ and Incompleately; or rather thus, Compleat Juftification hath two Parts: the first is not imputing past Sins, or accounting a true P enitent, as Righteous, (or clear from the Guilt of past Sin) as if he had never finned, through the Remiffion which God declared and fealed up to all fuch. in the Blood of his Son; and thus far Righteoufnels, as imputed goes, and is the firft Part, or Juftification begun. Part of Juftification is, the cleaning of the Confcience, and regenerating the Mind from the Nature, Power, and In-dwelling of Sin, by the effectual working of the Heavenly Power of Chrift, and bringing into the Heart, and estab lifhing bis everlasting Righteousness in the Room thereaf

THIS laft Part of Juftification is the Perfection the Quakers plead for, which our Author calls the proud Doctrine of a Sinless Perfection in this Life, but indeed is no otherthan Exprefs Scripture Doctrine; How earnestly does the Apoftle Paul exhort the Theffalonians thereto? 1 Theff. v. 22. Abstain from every Appearance of Evil. How fervently does he pray for their perfect Sanctification, and compleat Freedom from Sin? Ver. 23, 24. And the very God of Peace fanctify you wholly; and, I pray God, your whole Spirit, and Soul, and Body, be preferved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Christ. And grounds his Prayer upon the faithfulness of God. Verfe 25. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. Our Opponent we hope will not charge the Apostle with praying for what was not attainable; nor with publishing proud Doctrine when he fays, even as Chrift himself loved the Church, and gave himself for it, That he might fanctifie and cleanfe it, with the washing of Water by the Word. That he might prefent it to himself a glorious Church, not having Spot or Wrinkle or any fuch Thing but that it should be holy and with out blemish. Ephef. v. 25, 26, 27.

Of the Glorified Body of Chrift, and of
Perfection.

To our Opponents first Query,

DID Jefus Chrift after his Refurrection, bodily afcend into Heaven in the fame Body he • had here on Earth.'

[ocr errors]

WE answer, in the Words of Robert Barclay, (b) We believe that that Body, which Chrift took of the Virgin, which was of the Seed of Abraham and David, in which Chrift walked upon the Earth, and was crucified, did arife the third Day, was glorified, and remaineth in Heaven, This Body was and is without us.

To the next Query, Has Jefus Chrift, now in Heaven, the fame human Body he had here on Earth?' We also reply in the fame Author's Words, As we believe, he, Chrift, was a real Man; fo we also believe that he continues fo to be, glorified in the Heavens in Soul and Body.'

THIS is our Belief, according to the Scripture, nor doth G. W. in any wife contradict it, in his Nature of Chriftianity, p. 41. when he afketh, What Scripture Proof is there for thefe Words, and

that he exifteth outwardly bodily without us at God's right Hand? Can our Opponent produce those express Words in Scripture? 'twas that G. W. required, in opposing an Adverfary, whofe Hofanna and pretended Adoration, he fays, appeared to be only to him as the Son of Mary, as now exifting outwardly bodily without us. And on that Account G. W. queries thus, Is Chrift the Saviour as an outward Bodily Existent or Perfon without us, • diftinct from God, and on that Confideration to <be worshipped as God, yea or nay?' If our present Adversary will maintain what G. W. in that Place oppofes, let him undertake that Province: If not, 'tis trifling to pick a few Words • out of a Paragraph, without regard to the reft, and strain them to a Senfe foreign to the plain Meaning and Import of the Subject treated on.

Page 143. THE Vicar has this Query, Has • Chrift now a Body of Flesh and Bones, circumfcript and limited in that Heaven which is ⚫ above, and out of every Man on Earth? And are they not in Error who would limit it to a particular Place, and out of every Man on Earth, for the Spirit and Body of Chrift is not divided, but wherefoever the Spirit and Life of • Chrift is, it is in the Body of Chrift? And • Chrift is not abfent from his People as touching his Flesh.' To which he answers, Yes; Christ has now the fame Body for Subftance he had here on Earth, now a spiritual and heavenly, but ftill a true human Body, circumfcript, and li•mited in that Heaven which is above, and out of ' every Man on Earth.'
