Poy. We have agreed above, that the Meffiah is promised in the 3d chapter of Genelis, to reconcile the creature man to his God; we have alfo in our laft conference agreed from what are there fet down; from the 15th, 17th, 22d chapters of Genefis, that Almighty God made a covenant with Abraham, and promifed the Meffah fhould be of his feed, by whom all nations of the earth fhould be bleffed. We will now fee the fame promife renewed to Ifaac in the 26th chapter of the fame book; and the Lord appeared unto him, and faid, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which 1 fhall tell thee of; fojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee and thy feed I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I fware unto Abraham thy father; and I will make thy feed to multiply as the ftars of Heaven, and I will give unto thy feed all thefe countries; aud in thy feed fall all the nations of the earth be bleffed. Again the bleffing is repeated and promiled to Jacob in the 28th chapter, as we took notice in our laft conference. I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Ifaac: the land whereon thou lieft, to thee will I give it, and to thy feed; and thy Jeed fhall be as the duft of the earth, and fhall spread abroad to the Weft, and to the Eaft, and to the North, and to the South; and in thee, and in thy feed fhall all the families of the earth be bleffed. In the 49th chapter; Ifrael's bleffing to Judah prophetically points out that the Meffiah fhould be of that tribe; and marks out his coming. Judah thou art he whom thy brethren fhall

praife; thine hand fhall be in the neck of thy enemies; thy father's children fhall bow down before thee: Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my fon thou art gone up; he stooped down; he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who fhall roufe him up? The fcepter fhall not depart from Judah, nor a law-giver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him fhall the gathering of the people be, binding his fold unto the vine, and his affes colt unto the choice vine. He washed his garments in wine, and his cloaths in the blood of grapes: his eyes fhall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk." The laft prophecy I shall fet down is what yourself feels the weight of by your commiffion, enjoined by your lawgiver from the immediate command of Almighty God, Deut. 18th chap. And the Lord God faid unto me, "I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth, and he fhall fpeak unto them all that I fhall command him and it shall come to pafs, that whofoever will not hearken unto my words which he fhall fpeak in my name, I will require it of him." It is to be observed, Almighty God established his covenant with Abraham 600 years before the law or legiflation of Mofes; neither do we obferve any mention of it until it was enjoined. in the wilderness. Genefis 17th chap. And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and faid unto him, "I am the Almighty God, walk before me, and be thou perfect, and I will make My co

venant between Me and thee, and I will multiply thee exceedingly." And Abram fell upon his face; and God talked with him, saying, "As for Me, behold My covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations: neither halt thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name fhall be called Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee; and I will make thee exceeding fruitful; and I will make nations of thee, and kings fhall come out of thee; and I will eftablish My covenant between Me and thee, and thy feed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy feed after thee. This is My covenant which ye shall keep between Me and you, and thy feed after thee: every man-child among you fhall be circumcifed; and ye fhall circumcife the Aefh of your fore-fkin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt Me and you: and he that is eight days old fhall be circumcised among you, every man-child in your generations; he that is born in thy houfe, or bought with money of any ftranger which is not of thy feed. And the uncircumcised manchild whofe flefh of his fore-fkin is not circumcised, that foul fhall be cut off from his people; he hath broken My covenant; and God faid, Sarah thy wife fhall bear thee a fon, indeed and thou shalt call his name Ifaac; and I will Zestablish My covenant with him for an ever- lafting covenant, and with his feed after him.” On the fame day was Abraham circumcifed, - and líhmael his fon, and all the men of his I houfe,

houfe, born in the house, and bought with money of the franger, were circumcifed with him. It is therefore evident that the firft cóvenant dates its epoch from the day aforementioned; and as I obferved above, throughout thefe communications betwixt the Creator and his creatures, not a fingle mention is made of the legiflation of Mofes, but the whole force and bleffings are immediately referred and carried to the Meffiah. We find your law-giver, who was the facred pen-man of these prophecies, referring you to your Meffiah, where you care to receive life, and a curse if you refufe to obey.

Mofes. The prophecies are full that a Meffiah was promised, to whom we are referred, and from him we expect all bleffings; the circumftances and figns of his coming are prophefied to us by our father Jacob, in his laft bleffing to Judah, from whofe tribe he was to be born. The fceptre fhall not depart from Judah, nor a law-giver from between his feet; until ShiJoh come, and unto him fhall the gathering of the people be. The fceptre commenced with David, and continued in his defcendants until Judea became a Roman province, when the fceptre was granted to an alien (King Herod) by Auguítus the Roman Emperor: this alien not only intruded himself on the throne, but alfo difmiffed the legal line of priesthood, and intruded obfcure perfons, which cuftom was followed by his fucceffors, fhutting up the holy robe of the high prieft, under their privy feal; fo that the prieft had no longer the privilege

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to before we anoint the most holy: proceed it will be proper to draw fome conclufions from this verfe. 2309169

Mofes. Seventy weeks, taken each day for a year, is 490 years; to make reconcilement for fin, there must be a facrifice of an equal value; that is, a facrifice equal in fanctity, as the offence is in fin; capable of making atonement to the Divine Majefty for crimes committed; everlafting righteoufnefs, free from fin, never being stained, but always pure; and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the moit holy. Here is the Meffiah, the great Prophet, under and from whom Ifrael 908lq expects all bleffings.
