"Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling: for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

Preliminary Sketch of the Duty prescribed.

GOD's holy covenant and directions and encouragement, addressed in these verses to readers of the Bible, demand your solemn and genuine attention. Because, if there be any real necessity for God's sending you such a message if our Father in heaven Himself stoops down to hold up in His paths the goings of His children, whose walk through the world should be "with fear and trembling" -we must
