JOHN XXI. 515.

A. D. 33.

Then Jesus saith unto them, * Chil- | γάλων ἑκατὸν πεντηκοντατριῶν· καὶ το dren, have ye any meat? They answer- σούτων ὄντων οὐκ ἐσχίσθη τὸ δίκτυον. ed him, No.

* Or, Sirs.

VER. 6.

And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

VER. 7.

Therefore a that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, D'It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's cout unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.

See on chap. xiii. ver. 23. clause 2. b See on Luke ii. ver. 11. clause 3.

VER. 8.

And the other disciples came in a little ship ; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits) dragging the net with fishes.

1

VER. 9.

As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coats there, and

fish laid thereon, and bread.

VER. 10.

Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

VER. 11.

Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

VER. 12.

Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine, And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord,

VER. 13.

Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

VER. 14.

a This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

a Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, When the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you, John xx. 19. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you, 26.

because of thee, yet will I never be remembered the words of Jesus, which offended, Matt. xxvi. 33.

Take heed therefore unto your selves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood, Acts xx. 28. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by | constraint, but willingly ; not for flthy lucre, but of a ready mind, 1 Pet. |

He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. b He saith unto him, Feed c my sheep.

a And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man, Matt. 71, 72.

said unto him, Before the cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly, Matt. xxvii. 73-75.

VER. 18.

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest:

με when thou shalt be old, thou shalt shall gird thee, and carry thee whither stretch forth thy hands, and another

thou wouldest not.

VER. 19.

This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me..

VER. 20.

c See on Matt. xxv. ver. 33. clause 1. ὃς καὶ ἀνέπεσεν ἐν τῷ δείπνω ἐπὶ τὸ στῆ θος αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν ὁ παραδιδούς σε;

VER. 17.

He saith unto him a the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, b Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

a And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And im- | mediately the cock crew. And Peter

Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following ; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

VER. 21.
Κύριε, οὗτος δέ τί ;

Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do ?

VER. 92.

Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ λόγος οὗτος εἰς τοὺς ἀδελ φοὺς, ὅτι ὁ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος οὐκ ἀπο Θνήσκει· καὶ οὐκ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ὅτι οὐκ ἀποθνήσκει· ἀλλ ̓, Ἐὰν αὐτὸν θέλω μένειν ἕως ἔρχομαι, τί πρός σε ;

Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die ; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?

a For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom, Matt. xvi. 27, 28.

VER. 24.

A. D. 33.

This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things : and we know that his testimony is true.

VER. 25.

a And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight, Numb.xiii. 33. Then Amaziah, the priest of Beth-el, sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel ? the land is not able to bear all his words, Amnos vi. 10.

CHAP. I. 1-3.

CHAP. I.-VER. 1.

3 The former treatise have I made, Ο Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

a Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eye-witnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed, Luke i. 1-4.

VER. 2.

"Axp ng hμégas iVTEIλáμEVOS Toï àπoστόλοις διὰ Πνεύματος ἁγίου, οὓς ἐξελέξατο, ἀνελήφθη.

a Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature." He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God, Mark xvi. 15-19.

VER. 3.

A. D. 33.

a To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

a And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him, Matt. xxviii. 9. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted, 16, 17. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country, Mark xvi. 12. Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen, 14. And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honey-comb. And he took it,

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high, Luke xxiv. 42-49.

Then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing, John xx. 26, 27. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead, xxi. 12-14. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures: And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures : And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve; After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the Apostles, 1 Cor. xv. 3-7.
