NAZARETH.-CAPERNAUM.

And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

And he began to say unto them,

"This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said,

Verily I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.

And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, and 3 leaving Nazareth, he came down to and dwelt in Capernaum, a city of Galilee,3 which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali :5 that it might be fulfilled which was Zabulon. spoken by Isaiah 59 the prophet, saying,

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee," saw' two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And when they were gone out of their ships,5" and were washing their nets, it came to pass, that the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God. And as he stood by the lake, and saw 3 the 5 two ships standing by the lake,3 he entered into one of them,5° which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people out of the ship.

Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon,

"Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught." And Simon answering said unto him,3

SEA OF GALILEE.-DRAUGHT OF FISHES.

Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: never"theless at thy word I will let down the net."

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,
Depart from me; for I am a sinful man,

O Lord."

For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken and so was also James, and John, the

sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon.

And Jesus said unto them,"

"What thing is this? What new doctrine is this?? And what a "word is this! For with authority and power3 commandeth he even the "unclean spirits, and they do obey him, and come out."3

CHAPTER XV.

Healing of a Man on the Sabbath, and consequent Discussion.

FTER this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to John 5.1.10. Jerusalem.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. (For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.) And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him,

"Wilt thou be made whole ?"

The impotent man answered him,

"Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me."

Jesus saith unto him,

"Rise, take up thy bed, and walk."

And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked and on the same day was the sabbath.

The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured,

"It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed."4
