And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.1 And they went out,2 and departed, and went through the towns,3 and preached2" the gospel, and 3 that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed' them 2 every where.3

Now 5 when a convenient day was come, that 2 king 2 Herod 24 on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; and when the daughter of 2 Herodias came in,1 and danced 2 before them, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel,

"Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.”

And he sware unto her,

"Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half "of my kingdom."

And she went forth, and said unto her mother,

"What shall I ask?"

And she said,

And the king was exceeding sorry; yet' for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him at meat,' he would not reject her. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought and given her: and he went and beheaded 2 John 19 in the prison, and brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse,' and laid it in a tomb,2" and went and told Jesus.1 And 2 n at1 the time when the twelve were sent forth,5 Herod the body. 1 heard of the fame of Jesus; 1 (for his name was spread abroad;) and 2 of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; and of some," that Elijah 5* had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again: and others said, that it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. But" when Herod heard thereof, he said unto his servants,' that John the Baptist was risen from the dead: 2 and he said,

AFTER these things, the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and, when they were returned,3 told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.2

And when Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist," he said unto them,

"Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while." For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

And Jesus took them,3 and 5 departed 2 thence and went aside 3 by ship privately over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias, into a desert place 2 apart belonging to the city called Bethsaida.3 And the people had heard thereof1d and saw them departing, and many knew him, and a great multitude" followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased, and they afootƒ thither out of all the1 cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, "This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world."4 And when Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he straightway constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him to the other side, unto Bethsaida, while he sent the multitudes away. CHAPTER XXVII.

The Bread of Life.—Peter's Profession of Faith.

HE day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; (howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:) when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him,

"Rabbi, when camest thou hither?"

Jesus answered them and said,

66

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the "miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour "not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath "God the Father sealed."

66

Then said they unto him,

"What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"

Jesus answered and said unto them,

"This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath "sent."

They said therefore unto him,

"What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? "what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it "is written,He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'

Then Jesus said unto them,*
