CHAPTER XXXVI.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan.-Martha and Mary.-The Lord's
Prayer-The Return of the Seventy.

AND, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, say

66

"Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

He said unto him,

"What is written in the law? how readest thou?"

And he answering said,

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all

thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy "neighbour as thyself."

66

And he said unto him,

"Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live."

But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus,

"And who is my neighbour?"

And Jesus answering said,

"A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among "thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a "certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the "other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and "looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samari"tan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring “in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an "inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he "took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, "Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.' Which now of these three, thinkest thou, "was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?"

66

666

And he said,

"He that shewed mercy on him."

Then said Jesus unto him,

"Go, and do thou likewise."

Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And

she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said,

"Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? "bid her therefore that she help me.'

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: "but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which "shall not be taken away from her."

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him,

66

66

Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.'
And he said unto them,

Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

"Give us day by day our daily bread.

"And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is "indebted to us.

"And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil." And he said unto them,

"Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, "and say unto him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine. "in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.'? "And he from within shall answer and say, 'Trouble me not: the door "is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and "give thee.' I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, "because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it "shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that "seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son "shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? "or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall "ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know "how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him.” 3

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying,

"Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name."
And he said unto them,

"I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the 6.6 enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in "this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, "because your names are written in heaven."

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said,

"I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid "these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto "babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son 3

And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately,

"Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: for I tell you, "that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye "see, and have not seen them: and to hear those things which ye hear, "and have not heard them." 3

CHAPTER XXXVII.

The Healing of a Man born Blind, and consequent Controversy amongst the Jews. The Departure of Jesus beyond Jordan.

AND as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. John 9.1.12.

And his disciples asked him, saying,

"Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born "blind?"

Jesus answered,

"Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of "God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him "that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can "work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, and said unto him,

66

Go, wash in the pool of Siloam," (which is by interpretation,

"Sent.")

"Is not this he that sat and begged?"

Some said,

"This is he:"

Others said,

"He is like him;"

But he said,

"I am he."

Therefore said they unto him,

"How were thine eyes opened?'

He answered and said,

2.9

"A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and "said unto me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash:' and I went and "washed, and I received sight.'

Then said they unto him,

"Where is he?"

"I know not."

THE MAN BORN BLIND.

They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them,

"He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see."

Therefore said some of the Pharisees,

"This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day." Others said,

"How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles ?"

And there was a division among them.

They say unto the blind man again,

"What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes?"

He said,

"He is a prophet."

But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

66

And they asked them, saying,

"Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?"

His parents answered them and said,

"We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but by "what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his "we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself."

eyes,

These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore said his parents, "He is of age; ask him."

Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him,
"Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.”

He answered and said,

"Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, "whereas I was blind, now I see."

Then said they to him again,

"What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?"

He answered them,

"I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye "hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?"

Then they reviled him, and said,

"Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. We know that "God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence

"he is."

The man answered and said unto them,

"Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he "is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. Now we know that God heareth

They answered and said unto him,

"Thou wast altogether born in sin, and dost thou teach us?"

And they cast him out.

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him,

he said unto him,

[blocks in formation]

"Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee."

And he said,

"Lord, I believe."

And he worshipped him.

And Jesus said,

"For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not "might see; and that they which see might be made blind."

And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him,

66

"Are we blind also ?"

Jesus said unto them,

"If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, ' We see ;' "therefore your sin remaineth. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that "entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the "door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the "sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and lead"eth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth "before them, and the sheep follow him for they know his voice. And "a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him for they know "not the voice of strangers."

This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

Then said Jesus unto them again,

66

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not "hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be "saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, "but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might "have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that "is a hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, "seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth : and the wolf4
