3 Come then, divine INTERPRETER,
The Scriptures to our hearts apply : And taught by Thee, we GOD revere ; Him in three PERSONS magnify; In each the triune GOD adore, Who was, and is for evermore.
Holy Spirit the Comforter.
1 WHEN shall I hear the inward voice, Which only faithful souls can hear? Pardon, and peace, and heav'nly joys, Attend the promis'd COMFORTER: O come! and righteousness divine, And CHRIST, and all with CHRIST is mine. 2 O that the COMFORTER would come! Nor visit as a transient guest,
But fix in me His constant home,
And keep possession of my breast; And make my soul His lov'd abode, The temple of indwelling GOD!
3 Come, HOLY GHOST, my heart inspire! Attest that I am born again;
Come, and baptize me now with fire, Nor let Thy former gifts be vain: Grant me the sense of sin forgiv'n: O give the earnest of
4 Grant the indubitable seal
That ascertains the kingdom mine; The pow'rful stamp I long to feel, The signature of love divine! O shed it in my heart abroad! Fulness of love, of heav'n, of GOD!
Holy Spirit, the Water of Life.
1 THERE is a River, deep and broad; It's course no mortal knows;
It fills with joy the church of GOD, And widens as it flows.
2 Clearer than crystal is the stream, And bright with endless day; The waves with ev'ry blessing teem, And life and health convey.
3 Where'er they flow, contentions cease, And love and meekness reign; The LORD himself commands the peace, And foes conspire in vain.
4 Along the shores, angelic bands Watch ev'ry moving wave; With holy joy their breast expands, When men the waters crave.
5 Thither distressed souls repair; The LORD invites them nigh: They leave their cares and sorrows there; They drink, and never die.
6 Flow on, sweet Stream, more largely flow, The earth with gladness fill;
Flow on, till all the SAVIOUR know, And all obey His will!
Desiring the leadings of the Spirit.
1 COME, gracious SPIRIT, heav'nly Dove, With light and comfort from above; Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide! O'er ev'ry thought and step preside,
2 Conduct us safe, conduct us far From ev'ry sin and hurtful snare; Lead to Thy Word that rules must give, And teach us lessons how to live.
3 The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and choose Thy way; Plant holy fear in ev'ry heart,
That we from GOD may ne'er depart.
4 Lead us to holiness, the road
That we must take to dwell with GOD; Lead us to CHRIST,-the living way ; Nor let us from His pastures stray.
5 Lead us to GOD, our final rest, In His enjoyment to be blest; Lead us to heav'n, the seat of bliss, Where pleasure in perfection is.
Holy Spirit indwelling and witnessing.
1 COME, HOLY GHOST, all-quick'ning fire! Come, and in me delight to rest; Drawn by the lure of strong desire, O come and consecrate my breast!
The temple of my soul prepare, And fix Thy sacred presence there!
2 If now Thy influence I feel,- If now in Thee begin to live, Still to my heart Thyself reveal; Give me Thyself, for ever give: A point my good, a drop my store, Eager I ask, I pant for more.
3 Eager for Thee I ask and pant, So strong the principle divine Carries me out with sweet constraint, Till all my hallow'd soul is Thine; Plung'd in the GODHEAD's deepest sea, And lost in Thy immensity.
4 My peace, my life, my comfort Thou, My treasure and my all Thou art! True witness of my sonship, now, Engraving pardon on my heart, Seal of my sins, in CHRIST forgiv❜n, Earnest of love, and pledge of heav'n.
5 Come then, my GOD, mark out Thine heir, Of heav'n a larger earnest give; With clearer light Thy witness bear; More sensibly within me live:
Let all my pow'rs Thine entrance feel, And deeper stamp Thyself the seal!
1 WHY should the children of a king Go mourning all their days? Great COMFORTER! descend, and bring Some tokens of Thy grace.
2 Dost Thou not dwell in all the saints, And seal the heirs of heav'n? When wilt Thou banish my complaints, And show my sins forgiv'n?
3 Assure my conscience of her part In the REDEEMER'S blood;
And bear Thy witness with my heart, That I am born of GOD.
4 Thou art the earnest of His love, The pledge of joys to come; And Thy soft wings, celestial DOVE, Will safe convey me home.
