the Covenant before the World, and were manifested in and near Paradife. I fhall prove below that the Cherubim and all the Apparatus were inftituted; 'tis fufficient for the prefent, that Mofes has fhewed the Inftitutions of the chief Things, and that all Believers purfued these Institutions down, 'till he renewed them; the leffer things are dependant, fo the whole is proved, by finding each Part occafionally mentioned, as Gardens, facred Rivers, Purifications by Water, facred Trees &c. fo the Images, the Oracle, Prophets, Booths, Tabernacles, Priefts of the First-born, Habits, anointing with Oil, appointed Times, convoking by found of Horns &c. Altars, Sacrifices, Feafts, Dances, Creatures appointed, Firstlings, fo Gifts, Pairs of clean Creatures, a Ram, that a Lamb was the ufual Sacrifice: A Command and an Attempt to offer a First-born, fo a Human Sacrifice, fo in general Terms, Sacrifices, BurntOfferings, Meat and Drink Offerings, Service of Beafts, fo Kings, Crowns, Scepters, Kingdoms &c. which were all termed facred, holy, as they were Types of him &c. who was to be really juft, holy &c. fo among the Heathens and Apoftates. And though 'tis certain that these Re

pre

presentations in Figures by Sacrifices. &c. were criminal among the Heathens, where they were mifapplied: Yet they are now of use to confirm the Proof of the original Institution, and it appears, that Mofes had the fame Vision, that he imitated it, that the Figures he made, and put into the Sanctum San&torum were attended by an Oracle, and that he renewed all the emblematical Things, Offices and Services; and that his Writings are but a Tranfcript, an Explanation of what was couched under thefe Hieroglyphical Reprefentations, and of the Inftitutions by the Oracle in them, with fome Rules to prevent abuses: So what was neceffary for building the Temple was exhibited to David, and by him to Solomon, and at the proper time, when all these things were loft or mifunderstood, the Wrath and Sword of the Father, for Man's following Satan, was thence turned upon the Surety Chrift, in his Sufferings, for our Redemption, which we now exhibit by his Appointment, in Bread and Wine. And the ftupendous Benignity of his performing all Righteoufnefs for us, of thofe Sufferings, of his fupporting us, and of his Interceffion for us was by the Affiftance of the Holy Ghost to turn the Heart of Man to the Aleim,

to

to Chrift, and to his Brethren. That he has fubjected all Things, that he still fupports us, that he enhibits his Flood, and fumes the Incense of his Merits, Interceffion &c. before the real Faces for us, and that he will turn the Wrath and Sword upon Satan, Unbelievers &c. to all Eternity, and carry his Followers with him to the Manfions, thofe forfeited and rejected.

Befides the fupernatural Exhibition, the Figures, the Cherubim, and doubtless what belonged to them, were fet up; because they are occafionally mentioned by the well-known Names of the Faces of Jehovah and Adamah, upon Cain's Expulfion.

The Incarnation, a Person of the Effence joined to the Humanity, was exhibited in the Cherubim, fo Ezek. x. 8. And there appeared to the ufe of the Cherubim, the Exemplar of a Hand (the Power) of the Man, under their Wings. Thefe Figures exhibited the joint Perfon Chrift, who was to be born, in his first Station, fo the Prophet was exhibited in the Cherubim, a Man joined with a Perfon of the Effence.

Whether all the three Offices were in one Man at firft, as at laft; whether the

First-born of Adam's Sons, or &c. had the Gift of Prophecy, or the Oracle fupplied that, is not material. One of the Parts of the Office of a Prophet was to direct Priests, Kings and People, and to reprove Priefts, Kings, or People, when any of them erred; fo fuch Direction or Reproof was fitter and better known, when the Prophet was not Prieft or King. There were Prophets before the Flood, occafionally mentioned, as Enoch, Noah, &c. So after the Flood, as Abraham, &c. before Mofes.

The Prophets and their Actions, mentioned by Mofes, which were before him, or which are occafionally mentioned by others after him, prove little more than that they were feveral before the Flood; and the Patriarchs, and fome few others afterwards, of whofe Predictions fome are recorded, till Mofes who was like the great Prophet, was raised up.

Antediluv. 13. Gen. vi, 5. The Eccles.

The Spirit of God is faid to ftrive with Men, which Word throughout the whole Scripture fignifies the Office of the Church or preaching, by which we are pleaded with, reproved, difcern Good from Evil So Chrift was preached by Emblems, in Sacrifices &c.

What

What was done by the Prophets from the Beginning, is very fhortly hinted, because every Thing, which a Prophet did, was to be revived, and writ at length by Mofes, &c.

Whether foon after the fecond Eftablishment of the Priesthood, the Prophets were of the first or chofen Line till the Flood, as they appear to have been after the Flood till Mofes, when the Priesthood was alfo to be taken from the First, or chofen Line, and conferr'd upon Levi's Pribe, of which Mofes was one, is not certain, but feveral were.

A Prophet was a compleat Officer, he perfonated and acted Typically, fometimes by the Direction of the Person who was to be in Chrift, fometimes by that of the Holy Ghoft; was a travelling Oracle, had a typical Prefence of Chrift and of the Holy Ghoft, fo acted fometimes as typical Prophet, fometimes as typical Prieft, fometimes as typical King, as I think feveral of the Patriarchs did hence Mofes was call'd Vice-Aleim; leveral others, each a Perfon of the Aleim.

As a Perfon of the Effence was to inhabit the Man Chrift, and the Holy Ghost was in fome Cafes to influence the Manhood, while in the Station of a Prophet,
