There sin and sorrow ceasé,
And every conflict's o'er;

There we shall dwell in endless peace,
And never hunger more.

4 There, in celestial strains,

Enraptured myriads sing;
There love in every bosom reigns,
For God Himself is King.

We soon shall join the throng;
Their pleasures we shall share;
And sing the everlasting song,

With all the ransomed there.

How sweet the prospect is!

It cheers the pilgrim's breast: [ness, We're journeying through the wilderBut soon shall gain our rest.

621 Now we see through a glass darkly,

but then face to face.-1 Cor. 13, 12.

WHAT must it be to dwell above,

At God's right hand, where Jesus reigns,

Since the sweet earnest of His love O'erwhelms us on these dreary plains! No heart can think, no tongue explain, What bliss it is with Christ to reign. 2 When sin no more obstructs our sight, When sorrow pains our heart no more, How shall we view the Prince of light,

And all His works of grace explore! What heights and depths of love divine, Will there through endless ages shine! 3 Well, He has fixed the happy day When the last tear shall fill our eyes, And God shall wipe that tear away, And fill us with divine surprise To hear His voice, and see His face, And feel His infinite embrace! 4 This is the heaven I long to know; For this, with patience, I would wait, Till, weaned from earth, and all below, I mount to my celestial seat,

And wave my palm, and wear my crown, And, with the elders, cast them down.

622 In whom believing ye rejoice with

joy unspeakable.-1 Pet. 1, 8. 10 Jesus, the crown of my hope, My soul is in haste to be gone; O bear me, ye cherubim, up, And waft me away to His throne! 2 My Saviour! whom absent I love; Whom, not having seen, I adore; Whose name is exalted above All glory, dominion, and power; 3 Dissolve Thou these bonds that detain My soul from her portion with Thee; O strike off this adamant chain, And make me eternally free.

4 O then shall the veil be removed, And round me Thy brightness be poured;

I shall meet Him whom absent I loved, I shall see whom unseen I adored. 5 And then never more shall the fears, And trials, temptations, and woes, Which darken this valley of tears, Intrude on my blissful repose!

6 Or, if yet remembered above, Remembrance no sadness shall raise: They'll be but new signs of Thy love, New themes for my wonder and praise!

623 There shall in no wise enter into it

any thing that defileth.-Rev.21,27.

1 HEAVEN who hope to enter there,

EAVEN is a place of rest from sin;

Must here that holy course begin, Which shall their souls for rest prepare. 2 Clean hearts, O God! in us create; Right spirits, Lord, in us renew; Commence we now that higher state, Now do Thy will as angels do.

3 A life in heaven! O what is this?
The sum of all that faith believed:
Fulness of joy, and depths of bliss,
Unseen, unfathomed, unconceived.

4 While thrones, dominions, princedoms, powers,

And saints made perfect triumph thus: A goodly heritage is ours,

There is a heaven on earth for us.

5 The church of Christ, the school of grace,

The Spirit teaching by the word!

In those our Saviour's steps we trace;
By this His living voice is heard.

Firm in His footsteps may we tread,
Learn every lesson of His love!
And be from grace to glory led,

From heaven below to heaven above.

624 The holy city, new Jerusalem.

1

Rev. 21, 2.

JERUSALEM,

ERUSALEM, my happy home!

When shall my labours have an end,
In joy, and peace, and thee?

2 When shall these eyes thy heaven-built And pearly gates behold;

[walls

Thy bulwarks with salvation strong,
And streets of shining gold?

3 O when, thou city of my God,
Shall I thy courts ascend,

Where congregations ne'er break up,
And sabbaths have no end?

4 There happier bowers than Eden's
Nor sin nor sorrow know: [bloom,
Blest seats, through rude and stormy
I onward press to you.

[scenes

[woe,

5 Why should I shrink from pain and
Or feel at death dismay?
I've Canaan's goodly land in view,
And realms of endless day.

6 Apostles, martyrs, prophets, there
Around my Saviour stand;
And soon my friends in Christ below
Will join the glorious band.

7 Jerusalem, my happy home!
My soul still pants for thee;
Then shall my labours have an end
When I thy joys shall see.

625 The former things are passed

away.-Rev. 21, 4.

1 THE people of the Lord

Are on their way to heaven;

There they obtain their great reward, The prize will there be given.

2 Tis conflict here below;

Tis triumph there, and peace:
On earth we wrestle with the foe,
In heaven our conflicts cease,
3 Tis gloom and darkness here;
Tis light and joy above:
There all is pure, and all is clear;
There all is peace and love.

There rest shall follow toil,
And ease succeed to care:

The victors there divide the spoil;
They sing and triumph there.

Then let us joyful sing!

The conflict is not long:

We hope in heaven to praise our King, In one eternal song.

626 So shall we ever be with the Lord.

FOR

ever with the Lord!
Amen, so let it be;

Life from the dead is in that word;
Tis immortality.

Absent from Him I roam;

Yet nightly pitch my moving tent,
A day's march nearer home.

My Father's house on high,
Home of my soul, how near

At times to faith's foreseeing eye,
Thy golden gates appear!

My thirsty spirit faints

To reach the land I love,

The bright inheritance of saints,
Jerusalem above.

For ever with the Lord!

Father, if tis Thy will,

The promise of that faithful word,
E'en here to me fulfil.

Be Thou at my right hand,
Then can I never fail ;

Uphold Thou me, so shall I stand,
Fight, and I must prevail.

So when my latest breath,
Shall rend the veil in twain,
By death I shall escape from death,
And life eternal gain.

Knowing as I am known,

How shall I love that word! And oft repeat before the throne, For ever with the Lord!

627 Redeemed from among men.—Rev.

GIVE

14, 4.

LIVE me the wings of faith to rise
Within the veil, and see

The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.

2 Once they were mourning here below, And wet their couch with tears; They wrestled hard, as we do now, With sins, and doubts, and fears.

3 I ask them, whence their victory came;They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to His death.

4 They marked the footsteps that He
His zeal inspired their breast,-[trod,-
And, following their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.

5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise, For His own pattern given;

While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to heaven.

And run eternal rounds,

Beyond the limits of the skies,
And all created bounds.
