L.M. 337 The gospel of the grace of God. 1 Acts 20, 24. THIS is the word of truth and love, Sent to the nations from above; Jehovah here resolves to show What His almighty grace can do. 2 This remedy did Wisdom find To heal diseases of the mind; This sovereign balm whose virtues can Restore the ruined creature, man. 8 The gospel bids the dead revive, Sinners obey the voice and live; Dry bones are raised, and clothed afresh, And hearts of stone are turned to flesh. 4 Where Satan reigned in shades of night, The gospel sheds a heavenly light; Our lusts its wondrous power controls, And calms the rage of angry souls. 5 Lions and beasts of savage name Put on the nature of the lamb; Whilst the wide world esteem it strange, Gaze and admire, and hate the change. 6 May but this grace my soul renew. Let sinners gaze, and hate me too; The word that saves me does engage A sure defence from all their rage. C.M. 338 Grace and truth came by Jesus 1 Christ.-John 1, 17. THE Lord, descending from above, Invites His children near: While Power, and Truth, and boundDisplay their glories here. GOD, in the gospel of His Son, Makes His eternal counsels known; Tis here His richest mercy shines, And truth is drawn in fairest lines. 2 Here Jesus in ten thousand ways His soul-attracting charms displays, Recounts His poverty and pains, And tells His love in melting strains. 3 Wisdom its dictates here imparts, To form our minds, to cheer our hearts; Its influence makes the sinner live, It bids the drooping saint revive. 4 Our raging passions it controls, And comfort yields to contrite souls; It brings a better world in view, And guides us all,our journey through. 5 May this blest volume ever lie Close to my heart and near my eye; Till life's last hour my thoughts enAnd be my chosen heritage! ORD, I have made Thy word my choice, My lasting heritage: There shall my noblest powers rejoice, 2 I'll read the histories of Thy love, 3 Tis a broad land of wealth unknown, Seeds of immortal bliss are sown, 4 The best relief that mourners have, C.M. 342 The entrance of Thy words giveth 1 light.-Ps. 119, 130. THE Spirit breathes upon the Word, 2 A glory gilds the sacred page, It gives a light to every age- Its truths upon the nations rise- 4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine, As makes a world of darkness shine 5 My soul rejoices to pursue C.M. 343 We preach Christ crucified.— 1 Cor. 1, 23. 1CHRIST and His cross is all our theme; The mysteries that we speak 2 But souls enlightened from above 3 The vital savour of His name, Restores their fainting breath; While unbelief perverts the same, To guilt, despair, and death, THE WORD OF GOD: ITS INVITATIONS AND PROMISES. 7s. 344 Him that cometh to Me, I will in no 1 wise cast out.-John 6, 37.
