187 I saw the dead, small and great,

1

stand before God.-Rev. 20, 12. REAT God, what do we see and hear! The end of things created!

GR

The Judge of mankind doth appear,

On clouds of glory seated;

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead whom they contained before:
Prepare, my soul, to meet Him.

2 The dead in Christ shall first arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding;
Caught up to meet Him in the skies;
With joy their Lord surrounding:
No gloomy fears their souls dismay;
His presence sheds eternal day

On those prepared to meet Him.

3 Great Judge! to Thee our prayers we pour,

In deep abasement bending;

[hour,

O shield us through that last dread Thy wondrous love extending:

May we, in this our trial-day,

With wakeful hearts Thy word obey,
And thus prepare to meet Thee.

188 The former things are passed

away.-Rev. 21, 4.

O, what a glorious sight appears

L%

To our believing eyes!

The earth and seas are passed away,
And the old rolling skies.

2 From the high heavenwhere God resides, That holy, happy place,

The new Jerusalem comes down,
Adorned with shining grace.

3 The God of glory down to men
Removes His blest abode;

Men, the dear objects of His grace,
And He the loving God.

4 His own kind hand shall wipe the tears From every weeping eye;

And pains, and groans, and griefs, and fears,

And death itself shall die.

189 The Lord Jesus shall be revealed

THAT

from heaven.-2 Thess. 1, 7. HAT day of wrath, that dreadful day, When heaven and earth shall pass away,

What power shall be the sinner's stay? How shall he meet that dreadful day? 2 When, shrivelling like a parched scroll, The flaming heavens together roll, When louder yet, and yet more dread, Swells the high trump that wakes the dead;

3 Oh! on that day, that awful day,
When mantojudgmentwakes from clay,
Be Thou, O Christ, the sinner's stay,
When heaven and earth shall pass away.

190 The glorious appearing of the great

1

God and our Saviour.-Titus 2, 13. OW to the Lord, that makes us know The wonders of His dying love, Be humble honours paid below,

Νο

And strains of nobler praise above. 2 "Twas He that cleansed our foulest sins And washed us in His richest blood: Tis He that makes us priests and kings, And brings us rebels near to God. 3 To Jesus, our atoning Priest, To Jesus, our immortal King, Be everlasting power confest, And every tongue His glory sing. 4 Behold! on flying clouds He comes, [own; All heaven and earth their Sovereign And saints, uprising from their tombs, Triumphant gather round His throne." 5 The unbelieving world shall wail, While we rejoice to see the day; Come, Lord; nor let Thy promise fail, Nor let Thy chariot long delay.

191 For God shall bring every work

into judgment.-Ecc. 12, 14.

1 AND will the Judge descend?

And must the dead arise?

And not a single soul escape
His all-discerning eyes?

2 How will my heart endure The terrors of that day,

When earth and heaven before His face, Astonished, shrink away?

3 But ere the trumpet shakes The mansions of the dead;

4

5

Hark! from the gospel's gracious voice, What welcome tidings spread.

Ye sinners, seek His grace,
Whose wrath ye cannot bear;
Fly to the shelter of His cross,
And find salvation there.

So shall that curse remove
By which the Saviour bled,

And the last awful day shall pour
His blessings on your head.

192 He cometh to judge the earth.-

1

Ps. 96, 13.

WHEN Thou, my righteous Judge,

shalt come

To fetch Thy ransomed people home,
Shall I among them stand?
Shall such a worthless worm as I,
Who sometimes am afraid to die,
Be found at Thy right hand?
2 I love to meet among them now,
Before Thy gracious feet to bow,
Though vilest of them all:

But can I bear the piercing thought!
What, if my name should be left out,
When Thou for them shalt call?

3 Prevent-prevent it by Thy grace,
Be Thou, dear Lord, my hiding-place,
In this, the accepted day;

Thy pardoning voice, O let me hear,
To still my unbelieving fear,
Nor let me fall, I pray.

4 Let me among Thy saints be found

Whene'er the archangel's trump shall, To see Thy smiling face;

[sound,

Then loudest of the crowd I'll sing,

While heaven's resounding mansions

ring

With shouts of sovereign grace.

148th.

193 Watch, for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.-Matt 24, 42. E virgin souls, arise,

1

YWith all the dead awake;

Unto salvation wise,

Oil in your vessels take: Upstarting at the midnight cry, Behold your heavenly Bridegroom nigh. 2 He comes, He comes, to call The nations to His bar,

And take to glory all

Who meet for glory are:
Make ready for your free reward;
Go forth with joy to meet your Lord.
3 Go, meet Him in the sky;
Your everlasting Friend;"

Your Head to glorify,

With all His saints ascend;
Ye pure in heart, obtain the grace
To see, without a veil, His face.
4 Ye, that have here received
The unction from above,

And in His Spirit lived,

And thirsted for His love:
Jesus shall claim you for His bride;
Rejoice with all the sanctified.

3 The everlasting doors

Shall soon the saints receive,
Above those angel-powers
In glorious joy to live;

Far from a world of grief and sin,
With God eternally shut in.

194 Let us therefore come boldly unto

[ocr errors]

the throne of grace.-Heb. 4. 16.

ORD of mercy and of might, Of mankind the life and light, Maker, Teacher, Infinite,

Jesus, hear and save.

2 Great Creator, Saviour mild,

Humbled to a mortal child,

Captive, broken, bound, reviled,

Jesus, hear and save.

3 Throned above celestial things,
Borne aloft on angels' wings,
Lord of lords, and King of kings,
Jesus, hear and save.

Soon to come to earth again,
Judge of angels and of men,

Hear us now, and hear us then;

Jesus, hear and save!

THE DOMINION OF CHRIST.

195 They shall fear Thee

through.

out all generations.-Ps. 72, 5.

GREAT God, whose universal sway

The known and unknown worlds obey,

Now give the kingdom to Thy Son; Extend His power, exalt His throne. 2 Thy sceptre well becomes His hands: All heaven submits to His commands: His worship and His fear shall last Till hours, and years, and time be past. 3 As rain on meadows newly mown, So shall He send His influence down: His grace on fainting souls distils, Like heavenly dew on thirsty hills. The heathen lands, that lie beneath The shades of overspreading death, Revive at His first dawning light, And deserts blossom at the sight. 5 The saints shall flourish in His days, Drest in the robes of joy and praise; Peace, like a river, from His throne Shall flow to nations yet unknown.

holy hill of Zion.-Ps. 2, 6.
