340 Unto us which are saved it is

1

the power of God.-1 Cor. 1, 18.

GOD, in the gospel of His Son,

Makes His eternal counsels known; Tis here His richest mercy shines, And truth is drawn in fairest lines. 2 Here Jesus in ten thousand ways His soul-attracting charms displays, Recounts His poverty and pains, And tells His love in melting strains. 3 Wisdom its dictates here imparts, To form our minds, to cheer our hearts;

Its influence makes the sinner live, It bids the drooping saint revive. 4 Our raging passions it controls, And comfort yields to contrite souls; It brings a better world in view, And guides us all our journey through. 5 May this blest volume ever lie Close to my heart and near my eye; Till life's last hour my thoughts enAnd be my chosen heritage! 341 Thy testimonies have I taken as a

heritage for ever.-Ps. 119, 111.

ORD, I have made Thy word my choice,

My lasting heritage:

There shall my noblest powers rejoice,
My warmest thoughts engage.

2 I'll read the histories of Thy love,
And keep Thy laws in sight,
While through Thy promises I rove
With ever-fresh delight.

3 Tis a broad land of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arise,

Seeds of immortal bliss are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

4 The best relief that mourners have,
It makes our sorrows blest;

Our fairest hope beyond the grave,
And our eternal rest.

342 The entrance of Thy words giveth

1

THE

light.-Ps. 119, 130.

HE Spirit breathes upon the Word, And brings the truth to sight, Precepts and promises afford A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun;

It gives a light to every age-
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it still supplies
The gracious light and heat:
Its truths upon the nations rise-
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine,
For such a bright display,

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

343 We preach Christ crucified.—

1

CHRI

1 Cor. 1, 23.

HRIST and His cross is all our theme;
The mysteries that we speak

Are scandal in the Jew's esteem,

And folly to the Greek.

2 But souls enlightened from above With joy receive the word;

They see what wisdom, power, and love, Shine in their dying Lord.

3 The vital savour of His name,

Restores their fainting breath; While unbelief perverts the same, To guilt, despair, and death,

THE WORD OF GOD:

ITS INVITATIONS AND PROMISES.

344 Him that cometh to Me, I will in no

wise cast out.-John 6, 37.

WELCOME, welcome! sinner, hear!

Hang not back through shame or

Doubt not, nor distrust the call; [fear;
Mercy is proclaimed to all.

2 Welcome to the offered peace;
Welcome, prisoner, to release:
Burst thy bonds; be saved; be free:
Rise and come-He calleth thee.
3 Welcome, weeping penitent;
Grace has made thy heart relent:
Welcome, long estranged child;
God in Christ is reconciled.

4 Welcome to the cleansing fount,
Springing from the sacred mount;
Welcome to the feast divine,
Bread of life, and living wine.
5 All ye weary and distrest,
Welcome to relief and rest:
All is ready; hear the call;
There is ample room for all.

6 None can come that shall not find
Mercy called whom Grace inclined;
Nor shall any willing heart
Hear the bitter word-Depart!

7 Oh! the virtue of that price,
That redeeming sacrifice!

Come, ye bought, but not with gold,
Welcome to the sacred fold.

8.7.4.

345 Come unto Me, all ye that labour

and are heavy laden.-Matt. 11, 28.

COME, ye sinners, poor and wretched

Come, tis mercy's welcome hour; Jesus ready stands to save you, Full of pity joined with power; He is able,

He is willing: doubt no more.

[ocr errors]

20 ye needy, come and welcome,
God's free bounty glorify:
True belief, and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh-
Without money,

Come to Jesus Christ and buy.
3 Let not conscience make you linger;
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him:
This He gives you;

Tis His Spirit's rising beam.
4 Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruised and mangled by the fall!
If you tarry till you're better
You will never come at all:
Not the righteous-

Sinners, Jesus came to call.

5 View Him prostrate in the garden;
On the ground the Saviour lies!-
On the bloody tree behold Him!
Hear Him cry before He dies,
It is finished!

Sinner, will not this suffice?
6 Lo! the Incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of His blood:
Venture on Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude;
None but Jesus

Can do helpless sinners good.

7 Saints and angels, joined in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb;
While the blissful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with His name.
Hallelujah!

Sinners here may sing the same.

8.7.4.

346 Take My yoke upon you, and learn

of Me.-Matt. 11, 29.

OME, ye souls, by sin afflicted,

1 COM

Bowed with fruitless sorrow down,

By the broken law convicted,

By the tempter's snares undone

Look to Jesus!

Mercy flows through Him alone.

2 Take His easy yoke and wear it,
Love will make obedience sweet;
Christ will give you strength to bear it,
While His wisdom guides your feet
Safe to glory,

Where His ransomed captives meet.
3 Sweet as home to pilgrims weary,
Light to newly opened eyes,
Flowing springs in deserts dreary,
Is the rest the cross supplies:
All who taste it,

Shall to rest immortal rise.

4 Blessed are the eyes that see Him;
Blest the ears that hear His voice;
Blessed are the souls that trust Him,
And in Him alone rejoice;

His commandments

Then become their happy choice. 5 But to sing the rest of glory,

Mortal tongues far short must fall; Tongues celestial strive to reach it, But it soars beyond them all;

Faith, and Hope, and Love desire it, But it overwhelms them all.

347 Let your soul delight itself in

1

fatness.-Isa. 55, 2.

LET every mortal ear attend,

And every heart rejoice;

The trumpet of the gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.

2 O all ye hungry starving souls,
That feed upon the wind,

And vainly strive with earthly toys
To fill an empty mind.

3 Eternal Wisdom has prepared
A soul-reviving feast:
And bids your longing appetites
The rich provision taste.

4 O ye that pant for living streams,
And pine away and die;

Here you may quench your raging thirst With springs that never dry.
