2 Come, fill our hearts with inward strength,

Make our enlarged souls possess, And learn the height, and breadth, and length

Of Thine unmeasurable grace.

3 Now to the God whose power can do More than our thoughts or wishes know, Be everlasting honours done

By all the Church through Christ His Son.

8.7.

449 The love of Christ which passeth

knowledge.-Eph. 3, 19.

1 LOVE Divine! all love excelling,

Joy of heaven, to earth come down;
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
All Thy faithful mercies crown;
Jesus! Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art:
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Enter every longing heart!

2 Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit,

Let us find Thy promised rest:
Take away the love of sinning,
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

3 Come, almighty to deliver,

Let us all Thy grace receive!
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more Thy temples leave;
Thee we would be always blessing,
Praise Thee as Thy hosts above,
Serve and worship without ceasing,
Glory in Thy precious love.

4 Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless may we be;
Let us see our whole salvation
Perfectly secured by Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

450 The Dayspring from on high hath

visited us.-Luke 1, 78.

HRIST, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only Light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise,

Triumph o'er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near;
Daystar, in our hearts appear!
2 Visit every soul of Thine,
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief,
Fill with radiance divine,
Scatter all our unbelief;

More and more Thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day,

451 Ye have received the spirit of

adoption.-Rom. 8, 15.

SOVEREIGN of all the worlds on high,
Allow my humble claim;

Nor, while from earth to Thee I cry,
Disdain a Father's name.

2 My Father God, how sweet the sound!
How tender, and how dear!
Not all the melody of heaven
Could so delight the ear.

3 Come, sacred Spirit, seal the name
On my expanding heart;

And show that in Jehovah's grace
I share a filial part.

4 Cheered by a signal so divine,
Unwavering I believe:

And, Abba, Father, humbly cry,
Nor can the sign deceive.

5 On wings of everlasting love
The Comforter is come;
All terrors at His voice disperse,
And endless pleasures bloom.

452 They that dwell in the land of the

shadow of death,-Isa. 9, 2.

Come! and by Thyself revealing,
Dissipate the clouds beneath.

2 The new heaven and earth's Creator,
In our deepest darkness rise!
Scattering all the night of nature,
Pouring day upon our eyes!

3 Still we wait for Thine appearing,
Life and joy Thy beams impart;
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every poor benighted heart.

4 Come, extend Thy wonted favour
To our ruined, guilty race:
Come, Thou dear exalted Saviour,
Come, apply Thy saving grace.
5 Save us, in Thy great compassion.
O Thou mild, pacific Prince!
Give the knowledge of salvation,
Give the pardon of our sins.
6 By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Every burdened soul release;
By the teachings of Thy spirit,
Guide us into perfect peace.

453 still with Thee.-Ps. 139, 18.

1

2

TILL with Thee, O my God,
I would desire to be;

Ι
By day, by night, at home, abroad,
I would be still with Thee.

With Thee, when dawn comes in
And calls me back to care;
Each day returning to begin
With Thee, my God, in prayer,

3 With Thee, amid the crowd
That throngs the busy mart,
To hear Thy voice, mid clamour loud,
Speak softly to my heart.

4 With Thee, when day is done,
And evening calms the mind:
The setting as the rising sun

5

With Thee my heart would find. With Thee, when darkness brings . The signal of repose;

Calm in the shadow of Thy wings,
Mine eyelids I would close.

6

With Thee, in Thee, by faith
Abiding I would be;

By day, by night, in life, in death,
I would be still with Thee.

11.10.

454 I have set the Lord always before

me.-Ps. 16, 8.

1 STILL, still with Thee, when purple

morning breaketh,

When wake the birds, and all the shadows flee;

Fairer than morning, lovelier than the daylight,

Dawns the sweet consciousness, I am with Thee!

2 When sinks the soul, subdued by toil, to slumber,

Its closing eye looks up to Thee in prayer;

Sweet the repose, beneath Thy wings
o'ershading,

But sweeter still to wake and find
Thee there.

3 So shall it be at last in that bright

morning,

When the soul waketh, 'and life's shadows flee:

Oh, in that hour, fairer than daylight dawning,

Shall rise the glorious thought, I am with Thee!

455 Let us therefore come boldly unto

1 AP

the throne of grace.-Heb. 4, 16.

PPROACH, my soul, the mercy-seat,
Where Jesus answers prayer;

Then humbly fall before His feet,

For none can perish there.

2 Thy promise is my only plea;
With this I venture nigh:

Thou callest burdened souls to Thee,
And such, O Lord, am I.

3 Be Thou my shield and hiding-place, That, sheltered near Thy side,

I may my fierce accuser face,
And tell him Thou hast died.

4 0 wondrous love! to bleed and die,
To bear the cross and shame,
That guilty sinners, such as I,
Might plead Thy gracious name.

456 In the shadow of Thy wings will

make my refuge.-Ps. 57, 1. EAR Refuge of my weary soul, On Thee, when sorrows rise,

DE

On Thee, when waves of trouble roll,
My fainting hope relies.

2 To Thee I tell each rising grief,
For Thou alone canst heal;

Thy word can bring a sweet relief
For every pain I feel.

3 But oh! when gloomy doubts prevail, I fear to call Thee mine;

The springs of comfort seem to fail,
And all my hopes decline.

4 Yet, gracious God! where shall I flee? Thou art my only trust;

And still my soul would cleave to Thee, Though prostrate in the dust.

5 Hast Thou not bid me seek Thy face,
And shall I seek in vain ?

And can the ear of sovereign grace
Be deaf when I complain?

6 No; still the ear of sovereign grace
Attends the mourner's prayer;
O may I ever find access

To breathe my sorrows there.

7 Thy mercy-seat is open still;

Here let my soul retreat;

With humble hope attend Thy will,
And wait beneath Thy feet!

As He is, so are we in this world.1 John 4, 17.

1 LORD Jesus! are we one with Thee? O height, O depth of love!

With Thee we died upon the tree,
In Thee we live above.
