2 Engage this roving treacherous heart, O Lord, to choose the better part, To scorn the trifles of a day

For joys that none can take away. 3 Then let the wildest storms arise; Let tempests mingle earth and skies; No fatal shipwreck shall I fear, But all my treasures with me bear. 4 If Thou, my Jesus, still be nigh, Cheerful I live, and joyful die; Secure, when mortal comforts flee, To find ten thousand worlds in Thee.

402 Who hath reconciled us to Himself

by Jesus Christ.-2 Cor. 5, 18.

10 Paths of sin perverse I trod;

NCE I was estranged from God;

To the Blest resolved to be,
Without cause, an enemy.

2 Now to God I'm reconciled,-
For His love on me hath smiled
In the death of Christ His Son,
And my stubborn heart is won.
3 Soon shall I behold His face,
In His friendship heaven possess;
Perfect made in purity,

God in holiness to see.

4 Blessed be Thou, God of love! Mercy sending from above: Grateful let me ever be,

And a faithful friend to Thee.

403 Whether we live therefore or die,

1

we are the Lord's.-Rom. 14, 8.

FATHER, Son, and Holy Ghost,

One in Three, and Three in One,
As by the celestial host,

Let Thy will on earth be done;
Praise by all to Thee be given,

Glorious Lord of earth and heaven!

2 Vilest of the sinful race,

Lo! I answer to Thy call,
Meanest vessel of Thy grace,
Grace divinely free for all,
Lo! I come to do Thy will,
All Thy counsel to fulfil

3 If a creature weak as I
May to Thy great glory live,
All my actions sanctify,

All my words and thoughts receive;
Claim me for Thy service, claim
All I have and all I am.

4 Now, O God, Thine own I am;
Now I give Thee back Thine own:
Freedom, friends, and health, and fame,
Consecrate to Thee alone:

Thine I live, thrice happy I!
Happier still when Thine I die!

Ashamed of Me.-Mark 8, 38.
ESUS! and shall it ever be,

JESortal man ashamed of Thee?

Ashamed of Thee, whom angels praise! Whose glories shine through endless days!

2 Ashamed of Jesus!-Sooner far
Let evening blush to own a star;
He sheds the beams of light divine
O'er this benighted soul of mine.
3 Ashamed of Jesus!-Just as soon
Let midnight be ashamed of noon:
Tis midnight with my soul, till He,
Bright Morning Star! bid darkness flee.
4 Ashamed of Jesus!-that dear Friend
On whom my hopes of heaven depend;
No! when I blush-be this my shame,
That I no more revere His name.
5 Ashamed of Jesus!-Yes, I may,
When I've no guilt to wash away,
No tear to wipe, no good to crave,
No fears to quell, no soul to save.
6 Till then-nor is my boasting vain-
Till then I boast a Saviour slain!
And oh, may this my glory be,
That Christ is not ashamed of me!

Ps. 116, 16.

LORD, Thy heavenly grace impart,
And fix my frail, inconstant heart

Henceforth my chief desire shall be
To dedicate myself to Thee;

To Thee, my God, to Thee.
2 Whate'er pursuits my time employ,
One thought shall fill my soul with joy,
That silent, secret thought shall be,
That all my hopes are fixed on Thee;
On Thee, my God, on Thee.
3 Thy glorious eye pervadeth space;
Thou'rt present, Lord, in every place;
And wheresoe'er my lot may be,
Still shall my spirit cleave to Thee;

To Thee, my God, to Thee. 4 Renouncing every worldly thing, Safe, 'neath the covert of Thy wing, My sweetest thought henceforth shall That all I want I find in Thee;

In Thee, my God, in Thee.

112th.

A place of refuge.-Isa. 4, 6.
ORTH from the dark and stormy sky,
Lord, to Thine altar's shade we fly:
Forth from the world, its hope and fear,
Father, we seek Thy shelter here:
Weary and weak, Thy grace we pray;
Turn not, O Lord, Thy guests away!
2 Long have we roamed in want and pain,
Long have we sought our rest in vain;
Wildered in doubt, in darkness lost,
Long have our souls been tempest-
tost,

Low at Thy feet our sins we lay;
Turn not, O Lord, Thy guests away!

407 Thy people shall be my people, and

thy God my God.-Ruth 1, 16.

1 PEOPLE of the living God,

I have sought the world around,
Paths of sin and sorrow trod,

Peace and comfort nowhere found;

Now to you my spirit turns,

Turns, a fugitive unblest;

Brethren, where your altar burns,
O receive me into rest!

2 Lonely I no longer roam,

Like the cloud, the wind, the wave;
Where you dwell shall be my home,
Where you die shall be my grave:
Mine, the God whom you adore,
Your Redeemer shall be mine;
Earth can fill my heart no more,
Every idol I resign.

3 Tell me not of gain or loss,

Ease, enjoyment, pomp, and power;
Welcome, poverty and cross,
Shame, reproach, affliction's hour:
"Follow me!" I know the voice,
Jesus, Lord, Thy steps I see;
Now I take Thy yoke by choice,
Light Thy burden now to me.

408 We have left all, and have fol

JESUS,

lowed Thee.-Mark 10, 28.

ESUS, I my cross have taken,
All to leave, and follow Thee;
Naked, poor, despised, forsaken;
Thou, from hence, my all shalt be.
Let the world despise and leave me;
They have left my Saviour too;
Human hearts and looks deceive me-
Thou art not, like them, untrue.

2 Go, then, earthly fame and treasure,
Come, disaster, scorn, and pain:
In Thy service pain is pleasure;
With Thy favour, loss is gain:
I have called Thee, Abba, Father!"
I have set my heart on Thee;
Storms may howl,and clouds maygather,
All must work for good to me.

3 Man may trouble and distress me,
"Twill but drive me to Thy breast;
Life with trials hard may press me,
Heaven will bring me sweeter rest.
Oh! tis not in grief to harm me,
While Thy love is left to me;
Oh! 'twere not in joy to charm me
Were that joy unblest by Thee.

4 Thus I haste from grace to glory, Armed by faith, and winged by prayer;

Heaven's eternal day before me,

Thine own hand shall guide me there. Soon shall close my earthly mission, Soon shall pass my pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, Faith to sight, and prayer to praise.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE :

FAITH IN GOD.

S.M.

409 By grace are ye saved through

faith.-Eph. 2, 8.

1 FAITH, tis a precious grace

Where'er it is bestowed,

It boasts of a celestial birth,
And is the gift of God.

2

Jesus it owns as King,

And all-atoning Priest;

It claims no merit of its own,

But looks for all in Christ.

[blocks in formation]

It is our strength and stay;

Nor can we miss the heavenly road,

While it directs our way.

5 Lord, tis Thy work alone,

And that divinely free;

Send down the Spirit of Thy Son
To work this faith in me.

C.M.

410 I live by the faith of the Son of

1

God. Gal. 2, 20.

MY Jesus, while in mortal flesh
I hold my frail abode,

Still would my spirit rest on Thee,
Its Saviour, and its God.
