485 Follow after righteousness, godli

AV

ness, faith, love.-1 Tim. 6, 11. WAKE, my zeal, awake, my love, To serve my Saviour here below, In works which perfect saints above, And holy angels, cannot do.

2 Awake my charity, to feed

The hungry soul, and clothe the poor; In heaven are found no sons of need, There all these duties are no more. 3 Subdue thy passions, O my soul! Maintain the fight, thy work pursue, Daily thy rising sins control; And be thy victories ever new. 4 The land of triumph lies on high, There are no foes to encounter there: Lord, I would conquer till I die, And finish all the glorious war. 5 Let every flying hour confess I gain Thy gospel fresh renown; And when my life and labours cease, May I possess the promised crown,

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE:

JOY IN GOD.

486 He hath clothed me with the gar

ments of salvation.-Isa. 61, 10.

AWAKE, my heart, arise, my tongue,

Prepare a tuneful voice;

In God, the life of all my joys,
Aloud will I rejoice.

2 Tis He adorned my naked soul,
And made salvation mine!
Upon a poor polluted worn
He makes His graces shine.

3 And, lest the shadow of a spot
Should on my soul be found,

He took the robe the Saviour wrought, And cast it all around.

4 The Spirit wrought my faith, and love,
And hope, and every grace;
But Jesus spent His life to work
The robe of righteousness.

5 Strangely, my soul, art thou arrayed
By the great Sacred Three!

In sweetest harmony of praise
Let all my powers agree.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord.
-Ps. 95, 1.

COME, we that love the Lord,

And let our joys be known;
Join in a song of sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.
2 The sorrows of the mind

Be banished from this place;
Religion never was designed
To make our pleasures less.
3 Let those refuse to sing
That never knew our God;
But children of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad.

4

The God who rules on high,

And thunders when He please,
Who rides upon the stormy sky,

And manages the seas:

5

This awful God is ours,

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

Our Father and our love;

He shall send down His heavenly powers
To carry us above.

There shall we see His face,

And never, never sin;

There, from the rivers of His grace,
Drink endless pleasures in.

Yes, and before we rise

To that immortal state,

The thought of such amazing bliss
Should constant joy create.

The men of grace have found
Glory begun below:

Celestial fruits on earthly ground-
From faith and hope may grow.

9

The hill of Sion yields

A thousand sacred sweets,

Before we reach the heavenly fields.

Or walk the golden streets.

10 Then let our songs abound, And every tear be dry;

We're marching through Immanuel's ground

To fairer worlds on high.

488 The health of my countenance and

my God.-Ps. 42, 11.

1 M The life of my delights,

Y God, the spring of all my joys,

The glory of my brightest days,
And comfort of my nights.

2 In darkest shades if He appear,
My dawning is begun;

He is my soul's sweet morning star,
And He my rising sun.

3 The opening heavens around me shine With beams of sacred bliss,

While Jesus shows His heart is mine,
And whispers, I am His.

4 My soul would leave this heavy clay
At that transporting word,
Run up with joy the shining way
To embrace my dearest Lord.

5 Fearless of hell and ghastly death,
I'd break through every foe;

The wings of love, and arms of faith,
Should bear me conqueror through.

489 Whom having not seen, ye love.—

NOT

2 Pet. 1, 8.

OT with our mortal eyes
Have we beheld the Lord:

Yet we rejoice to hear His name.
And love Him in His word.

2. On earth we want the sight

Of our Redeemer's face;

Yet, Lord, our inmost thoughts delight
To dwell upon Thy grace.

And when we taste Thy love,
Our joys divinely grow,

Unspeakable like those above,
And heaven begins below.

490 Happy is that people whose God is

10

the Lord.-Ps. 144, 15.

HAPPY they who know the Lord, With whom He deigns to dwell! He feeds and cheers them by His word; His arm supports them well.

2 He helped His saints in ancient days, Who trusted in His name;

And we can witness, to His praise,
His love is still the same.

3 His presence sweetens all our cares,
And makes our burdens light;
A word from Him dispels our fears,
And gilds the gloom of night.

4 Lord, let us then most highly prize
These tokens of Thy love,

Till Thou shalt bid our spirits rise,
To worship Thee above.

491 Your life is hid with Christ in God.

10

-Col. 3, 3.

HAPPY soul, that lives on high, While men lie grovelling here; His hopes are fixed above the sky, And faith forbids His fear.

2 His conscience knows no secret stings, While peace and joy combine

To form a life, whose holy springs
Are hidden and divine.

3 He waits in secret on his God;
His God in secret sees:

Let earth be all in arms abroad,
He dwells in heavenly peace.

4 His pleasures rise from things unseen, Beyond this world and time,

Where neither eyes nor ears have been. Nor thoughts of sinners climb.

5 He looks to heaven's eternal hill
To meet that glorious day:
But, patient, waits his Saviour's will
To fetch his soul away.

492 That your joy may be full.—1 John

1

1, 4.

JOY is a fruit that will not grow

In nature's barren soil;

All we can boast, till Christ we know,
Is vanity and toil

2 But where the Lord has planted grace,
And made His glories known;
There fruits of heavenly joy and peace
Are found, and there alone.

3 A bleeding Saviour seen by faith,
A sense of pardoning love,
A hope that triumphs over death,
Give joys like those above.

4 To take a glimpse within the veil,
To know that God is mine,
Are springs of joy that never fail,
Unspeakable, divine!

5 These are the joys which satisfy,
And sanctify the mind:

Which make the spirit mount on high, And leave the world behind.

493 Who shall separate us from the

A

love of Christ ?-Rom. 8, 35.
DEBTOR to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;
Nor fear with Thy righteousness on,
My person and offerings to bring:
The terrors of law and of God
With me can have nothing to do;
My Saviour's obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.
2 The work which His goodness began,
The arm of His strength will complete
His promise is Yea and Amen.
And never was forfeited yet.

Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below nor above
Can make Him His purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from His love.
