Finally, let it be a subject of earnest self-examination whether there is a sensible increase in the degree of your obedience to the scriptural command, "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Have you good grounds for hope that worldly cares, worldly hopes, and worldly enjoyments excite, day by day, a less lively interest in your heart? Do your thoughts revert more frequently, more instinctively, to the contemplation of heavenly things? Is prayer more fully appreciated as an act of communion with Him "whom having not seen you love?" Is that love becoming, day by day, a more influential principle, " constraining" to the avoidance * Galatians, iii. 26. † Galatians, v. 6. 1 Peter, i. 8.

of sin, "constraining" to the practice of holiness? Are you "growing up into Him in all things, which is the Head, even Christ?"* Are you gradually becoming able, in any degree, to realize that deadness to the world described by one of those whose "faith we follow ?"+ "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”‡
