INTRODUCTION.

AT a time like the present, when Europe is distracted with wars and tumults, it is the unbounded duty of every man carefully to confider how he may best defend himself and property, his king and country. But let none take fuch hafty steps as many unthinking mortals lately did, who made their exit on the fatal tree within the walls of our great Metropolis.

To fhew the folly of all fuch rafh proceedings, and diffuse knowledge into the mind, is one great defign of this work; which contains the sufferings of those who have endeavoured to fubvert the Conftitution, whether kings or fubjects.
