A. In the fixth petition (which is, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil o), we pray, That God would either keep us from being tempted to fin p, or support and deliver us when we are tempted q.


Q. 107. What doth the conclufion of the Lord's prayer teach

A The conclufion of the Lord's prayer (which is, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever, amenr. teacheth us, to take our encouragement in prayer from God only, and in our prayers to praise him, afcribing kingdom,

thine own fake, O my God: for thy city, and thy people are called by thy name.

YOD fpake all these words, faying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the houfe of bondage.

I. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

II. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing, that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not

bow down thyfelf to them, nor ferve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, vifiting the iniquity of the Fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me and fhewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments,

For in fix days the Lord made heaven and earth, the fea, and all that in them is, and rested the feventh day: wherefore the Lord bleffed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The LORD's PRAYER Matth. vi.

UR Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be the name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive us our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.



Believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jefus Chrift his only Son our Lord, which was conceived by the Holy Ghoft, born of the Virgin Mary, fuffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he defcended into hell *,, the third day be arofe again from the dead, he afcended into heaven, and fitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he fhall come to judge the quick and the dead, I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, and communion of faints, the forgiveness of fins, the refurrection of the body, and the life everlafting. O much of every queftion, both in the Larger and Shorter Catechifm, is

fition or fentence in itself, to the end the learner may further improve it upon all occafions, for his increafe in knowledge and piety, even out of the courfe of catechifing, as well as in it.

And albeit the fubftance of the doctrine comprised in that abridgment, commonly called the Apostles Creed, be fully fet forth in each of the Catechifms, fo as there is no neceffity of inferting the creed itfelf; yet it is here annexed, not as though it were compofed by the apostles, or ought to be efteemed canonical fcripture, as the Ten Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer, (much lefs a prayer, as ignorant people have been apt to make both it and the Decalogue), but because it is a brief fum of the Chriftian faith, agreeable to the word of God, and anciently received in the churches of Chrift.
