Not thou of mine!" And Jesus, with a smile Of heavenly sadness, met his earnest looks, And answered,
Suffer it to be so now; For thus it doth become me to fulfil All righteousness." And, leaning to the stream, He took around him the Apostle's arm And drew him gently to the midst.
The wood Was thick with the dim twilight as they came Up from the water. With his clasped hands Laid on his breast th' Apostle silently Followed his master's steps — when lo! a light, Bright as the tenfold glory of the sun, Yet lambent as the sofily burning stars, Enveloped them, and from the heavens away Parted the dim blue ether like a veil ; And as a voice fearful exceedingly, Broke from the midst,

Thy crown of victory won, Hast passed from earth - passed to thy home on Man may no longer trace,
In thy celestial face,
Nor may thy servants hear,
Save with faith's raptured ear, The voice of tenderness, God's holy Son!
Our eyes behold thee not,
Yet hast thou not forgot Those who have placed their hope, their trust in
Before thy Father's face,
Thou hast prepared a place,
It was no path of flowers,
Through this dark world of ours, Beloved of the Father, thou didst tread ;
And shall we, in dismay,
Shrink from the narrow way, When clouds and darkness are around it spread ?
O thou, who art our life,
Be with us through the strife!
To see a Father's love
Even through the awful gloom,
Which hovers o'er the tomb,
Our spirits shall not dread
The shadowy way to tread, Friend, Guardian, Saviour, which doth lead to thee.
