No pains have been spared on the part of
either the author or the publishers to
render this second edition of the Ency-
clopædia of Agriculture as perfect as
possible. The author undertook a journey
into France and Germany in 1828, on
purpose to procure information respect-
ing the present state of agriculture on
the continent; and the publishers have
gone to the expense of nearly 500 new
Engravings, nearly half of which are new
subjects. The co-operation of upwards
of forty individuals, (a list of whom is
appended,) has also been procured, or
voluntarily given; and their suggestions
or additions have embraced almost every
department of the work. On the whole,
the author thinks himself warranted in
asserting that the work is now as perfect
as its nature and the present state of
agricultural science and practice will
admit.

"A very learned translation, the merits of which are so considerable as to entitle it to the patronage of the public. We have abundant proofs that it proceeds from the pen of a writer who has long and attentively studied the history which he interprets and illustrates; and it furnishes ample testimony to his learning, diligence, and discernment. The general reader is here furnished with a version of the most eminent of the historians of Greece, as literal and as perspicuous as erudition and industry combined can render it. We are really surprised at the mass of annotations in these volumes. The historical and geographical notes are also numerous, and will afford invaluable assistance to the student." Eclectic Review.
