THIS volume, READINGS IN ENGLISH PROSE, forms the prose part of READINGS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE. The poetical part is also published separately, under the title of READINGS IN ENGLISH POETRY.
Both volumes are designed as Reading-Books for upper classes in Schools, while the complete work forms a suitable companion to such manuals as the History of the English Language and Literature in Chambers's Educational Course. *
The introduction to the present volume contains a series of short specimens from English writers, in prose and poetry, from the earliest times to 1558 A:D, The value of these, as shewing the progress of the English language, will not fail to be appreciated by the Teacher. The Readings are arranged in chronological order, and are introduced by a short biographical notice of each author. The foot-notes contain explanations
