By me, O my Saviour stand,
In sore temptation's hour!
Save me with thine out-stretch'd hand, And show forth all thy power; O! be mindful of thy word!
Thy all-sufficient grace bestow; Keep me, keep me, gracious Lord, And never let me go.
Give me, Lord, a holy fear,
And fix it in my heart: That I may from evil near With timely care depart; Sin be more than hell abhorr'd, Till thou destroy the tyrant foe; Keep me, keep me, gracious Lord, And never let me go.
Never let me leave thy breast,
From thee, my Saviour, stray; Thou art my support and rest, My true and living way; My exceeding great reward,
In heaven above, and earth below; Keep me, keep me, gracious Lord, And never let me go.
Never let me go, till I,
Upborne on wings of love, Gain the region of the sky,
And take my seat above; See thee by all heaven ador'd,
And all thy glorious fulness know;
Keep me, keep me, gracious Lord, And never let me go.
32. "After all that I."
AFTER all that I have done, Saviour, art thou pacify'd? Whither shall my vileness run? Hide me, earth, the sinner hide! Let me sink into the dust, Full of holy shame adore! Jesus Christ, the good, the just, Bids me go and sin no more!
O! confirm the gracious word, - Jesus, Son of God and man! Let me never grieve thee, Lord, Never turn to sin again!
all in all thou art;
Till thou bring thy nature in, Keep this feeble, trembling heart!
Save me, save me, Lord, from sin!
33. “I want a principle.”
I want a principle within
Of godly, jealous fear;
A sensibility of sin,
A pain to feel it near.
That I from thee no more may part, No more thy goodness grieve: The filial awe, the fleshy heart, The tender conscience give.
Quick as the pupil of an eye, O God, my conscience make! Awake, my soul, when sin is nigh, And keep it still awake!
If to the right or left I stray, That moment, Lord, reprove; And let me weep my life's short day, For having griev'd thy love.
O! may the least omission pain My well-instructed soul! And drive me to that grace again, Which makes the wounded whole.
34. "Lord! how great."
O Lord! how great the favour, That we, such sinners poor, Can, through thy death's sweet savour Approach thy mercy's door,
And find an open passage
Unto the throne of grace; There wait the welcome message, Which bids us go in peace.
Lord, we are helpless creatures, Full of the deepest néed, Throughout defil'd by nature, Stupid, and inly dead :
Our strength is perfect weakness, And all we have is sin;
Our hearts are all uncleanness,
A den of thieves within.
In this forlorn condition Who shall afford us aid? Where shall we find compassion, But in the church's head? JESUS, thou art all pity!
O! take us to thine arms! And exercise thy mercy,
To save us from all harms.
We'll never cease repeating Our numberless complaints, But ever be entreating
The glorious king of saints, Till we attain the image Of Him we inly love, And pay our grateful homage With all the saints above.
Then we, with all in glory, Shall thankfully relate Th' amazing, pleasing story Of JESU's love so great; In this blest contemplation We shall for ever dwell, And find such consolation As none below can tell.
Hymns, on various subjects.
ON THE HOLY SCRIPTURES AND PASSAGES IN THEM.
1. On the Holy Scriptures.-Part 1. O! GOD of wisdom, and of might! Great Ruler in these realms of night! Whose truths are hid from prudent eyes But make the babe and suckling wise; Help thy inquiring servants, Lord, To hear and understand thy word.
Reveal thy Scriptures to our mind, And let us heav'nly treasures find! Do thou those sacred leaves unfold, And bid us all thy grace behold. O let thy Spirit lead us forth, And teach us all their endless worth.
Direct us, lest we judge amiss; Lest error cloud the hidden bliss: Th' engrafted word may we receive, And back to thee the glory give! O! make us know, as well as hear, The happy tidings treasur'd there.
