Stoop, to a poor sinner, stoop,
And let thy healing grace abound
Heal my bruises, and bind up
My spirit's every wound.

Saviour of my soul, draw nigh,
In mercy haste to me;
At the point of death I lie,

And cannot come to thee:
Now thy kind relief afford;

The wine and oil of grace pour in; Good physician, speak the word, And heal my soul of sin.

Pity to my dying cries

Hath drawn thee from above: Hovering over me with eyes

Of tenderness and love: Now I long to see thy face,

The Balm of Gilead to receive; Thou canst save me by thy, grace, And bid the sinner live,

Surely then the bitterness

Of second death is past;
When on thee, my righteousness
On thee, my soul I cast;
Thou hast brought me to thy inn,
And I am of thy promise sure;
Thou canst cleanse me from all sin,
And all ray sickness cure.

JOHN viii. 11.

Perfect then the work begun,
And make the sinner whole;
All thy will on me be done,
In body, spirit, soul:

Still preserve me safe from harms,
And kindly for thy patient care ;
Take me, Jesus, to thine arms,
And keep me ever there.

11. "Sin no more.”

JESUS, friend of sinners, hear!

Yet once again I pray :

From my debt of sin set clear,

For I have nought to pay.
Speak! O speak! thy kind release,
A poor backsliding soul restore!
Love me freely, seal my peace,
And bid me sin no more.

For my selfishness and pride
Thou hast withdrawn thy grace;

Left me long to wander wide,
An outcast from thy face;
But I now my sins confess,
And mercy, mercy I implore;
Love me freely, seal my peace,
And bid me sin no more.

Tho' my sins as mountains rise,

And swell and reach to heaven,

Mercy is above the skies,
I may be still forgiven;
Infinite my sins increase,

But greater is thy mercy's store;
Love me freely, seal my peace,
And bid me sin no more.

Sin's deceitfulness hath spread
A hardness o'er my heart ; .
But if thoù thy Spirit shed,
The stony shall depart.

Shed thy love, thy tenderness,

And let me feel thy softening power:

Love me freely, seal my peace,

And bid me sin no more.

From the oppressive power of sin
My struggling spirit free;
Perfect righteousness bring in,
Unspotted purity:

Speak, and all this war shall cease,

And sin shall give its raging o'er :
Love me freely, seal my peace,
And bid me sin no more.

For this only thing I pray,
And this will I require,
power of sin away,

Take the

Fill me with chaste desire; Perfect me in holiness:

Thine image to my soul restore: Love me freely, seal my peace, And bid me sin no more.

HYMNS FOR PRISONERS.

12. Christ's compassion to the tempted.

HEBREWS iv. 15.

WITH joy we meditate the grace
Of our High Priest above;
His heart is made of tenderness,
His bowels melt with love,

Touch'd with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame;
He knows what sore temptations mean,
For he hath felt the same.

He, in the days of feeble flesh,
Pour'd out strong cries and tears;
And in his measure feels afresh
What ev'ry member bears.

He'll never quench the smoking flax,
But raise it to a flame;

The bruised reed he never breaks,
Nor scorns the meanest name.

Then let our humbled hearts address
His mercy and his pow'r ;
To grant us his deliv'ring grace
In each conflicting hour.

Should tempests boil the raging main,
And blackening stains assail,
"Tis He that can our souls sustain,
Our faith forbid to fail,

WATTS.

On various subjects,

1. The uncertainty of time,
TO-MORROW, Lord! is thine,
Lodg'd in thy sov'reign hand;
And if its sun arise and shine,
It shines at thy command.

The present moment flies,
And bears our life away;
Oh! make thy servants truly wise,
T'improve each passing day.

One thing demands our care:
Be that one thing pursu'd;
Lest, slighted now, we never hear
Thy warning voice renew'd.

Teach us thy name to fear,
Spread an alarm abroad;
And cry in ev'ry careless ear,
"Prepare to meet thy God!"

2. Death and Judgment.-Part i.

AND am I born to die,

To lay this body down?

And must my trembling spirit fly

Into a world unknown?
