PREFACE. The preparation of the following sketch has been a labor of love. The attachment which the writer entertains for his old company- the Chatham Artilleryan organization whose birth was well nigh coeval with the termination of the Revolution of 1776-whose manhood has been demonstrated for eighty yearswhose patriotism has never been questioned -- whose liberality and high-toned friendship have been ever warmly acknowledged-whose readiness and ability to respond with alacrity, intelligence, fidelity and efficiency to every duty devolved, whether amid the sunshine of peace, or the shadows of war, have always been freely admitted-whose record is untarnished, and whose every memory is pleasant, generous and heroicis peculiar in its character, firm and abiding; and if this brief outline of the services rendered by the Battery during the memorable Confederate struggle for independence be kindly received by my brother members, and serve to perpetuate the lively remembrance of those days of privations, exertion, and |
