CURIOUS FRAGMENT OF ANCIENT ART.-There is in the Royal Museum of Paris, an Etruscan bas-relief, representing a man sitting at a sort of chess-board, over which he appears to be moving three little balls. He has one of these balls in his right hand; while in the left he holds a tablet covered with written characters. On the edge of the bas-relief is the word Abcar, in the Etruscan character. Professor Orioli, of Bologna, has lately published a dissertation on this curious fragment of ancient art, in which he expresses his belief, that the figure represents an ancient calculator; and that the tablet in his hand exhibits Etruscan arithmetical ciphers. He supposes that the word Abcar should be Abacar, from Abacus, and that the three little balls are the abacali of Pliny (book xxvi. chap. 30). Professor Orioli likewise endeavours to determine the numerical value of the ciphers on the table, and to explain the process of the calculation.

EGYPTIAN MUMMY.- Amongst the bandages of the Egyptian mummy, presented to the Philosophical Hall, in the town of Leeds, by the late John Blayds, Esq, a small piece of red leather has been lately found, stamped with hieroglyphic characters, which determine the date of this interesting monument of antiquity. They are the Royal Legend of Remesses V. the Amenophis--Memophis of the Greek writers-the father of the great Sesostris, and the last monarch of Manetho's 18th dynasty of the Kings of Egypt. He ascended the throne of the Pharaohs in the year 1493 B. C. The individual, therefore, whose remains are still in so perfect a state of preservation, was the contemporary of Moses, and officiated as incense-bearer and scribe to the shrine of the God Mandou, at Thebes, in Upper Egypt, more than 3,800 years ago.

Subject. How far have the laws of the Jews been abrogated by the Christian dispensation ?"

The following will be the subjects of examination in the last week of Lent term, 1829:

1. The Gospel of St. Luke;

2. Paley's Evidences of Christianity; 3. The Hecuba of Euripides;

4. The Third Book of Cicero's Offices. William Aldwin Soames, of Trinity college, has been elected University Scholar on Lord Craven's foundation. "The electors are desirous of marking with distinguished commendation the merits of C. Wordsworth, of Trinity college, which they considered very nearly equal to those of the successful candidate."

In the month of March last, a member of the Senate addressed a letter to the Rev. Professor Lee on the subject of Oriental MSS., dispersed among various libraries in Europe, as well as in the East. To this letter the learned Professor very promptly replied, and laid the correspondence before one of the Vice-Presidents of the Royal Asiatic Society. The subject has since been under consideration, and has at length been brought to some degree of maturity. A prospectus has been published of a plan for translating and publishing such interesting and valuable works on Eastern History, Science, and Belles Lettres as are still in MS. in the libraries of the Universities, the British Museum, and the East-India House, and in other collections, in Asia and Africa, as well as in Europe; and for providing funds for carrying this object into execution." The plan is under the patronage of his Majesty, as well as of several of the Royal Dukes, the Chancellors of the two Universities, the Archbishop of

66

Canterbury, the Governor General of India, and other distinguished personages. "The object proposed is, to publish, free of expense to the Authors, translations of the whole or parts of such works in the Oriental languages as a committee of Orientalists already appointed shall approve. These translations are to be accompanied by the original texts, and such illustrations as may be considered necessary. By the publication of the original text it is intended to multiply copies of such works as are scarce; and to furnish students, at a moderate expense, with correct copies of the best Asiatic works, to which they might not otherwise have access.'

The Norrisian Prize is adjudged to the Rev. W. M. Mayers, of Catherine hall the subject, The Proofs of a General Judgment to come, and the Advantages of the Knowledge revealed to Mankind concerning it." The Hul sean Prize for last year was adjudged to this gentleman, for his Essay on the Divinity of Christ." It will be pleasing to our readers to learn, especially when the subjects of these essays are considered in connection with it, that this young gentleman is of Jewish parentage, and has not been a convert to the Christian religion more than four years.
