PETER PARLEY'S UNIVERSAL HIS

TORY for the YOUNG. With nearly 200 Woodents. This work, an entirely new production of its highly popular Author, is reprinted from an unpublished copy, specially forwarded by him for the purpose. In adapting it for the English Public, great pains have been taken to avoid those national peculiarities by which his earlier works have been disfigured, preserving at the same time his attractive style and felicitous manner of conveying instruction. This genuine English edition will, therefore, it is confidently believed, be found an invaluable addition to our educational works, and prove every way worthy of the confidence of parents and teachers. the Rev. JOHN CHRISTIAN FREDERIC BURK, A.M. D. Ph.

**That this Memoir should have excited so much attention and interest in Germany, as to have rapidly passed already through two editions, is not a matter of surprise. Bengel has all along been well known to the most excellent and learned persons of that country, as one of the brightest ornaments, not of Germany alone, but of the whole Protestant communion in the last century. And such of his works as have reached us in Latin, with the name of BENGELIUS affixed, have long been deposited as a treasure in our public libraries, and in those of our best divines. As neither his learning nor his life were of ordinary stamp, so it appears impossible for any, who delight in excellences of either kind, to read without deep interest his Memoir which is now offered in an English dress to the public. of JOHN DONNE, D.D. Dean of St. Paul's; with a Memoir of his Life, and Critical Notices of his Writings. By HENRY ALFORD, M.A. Vicar of Wymeswold, Leicestershire, and late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. 4 vols. 8vo.

It has often been a subject of regret, that the Works of this eminent Divine and Poet have not been collected in a modern uniform edition; and in the last number of the QUARTERLY REVIEW there occurs a recommendation that such an edition should be undertaken. Many months,

however, before the appearance of that article, the present Editor had commenced preparing for the press the Life and Works of Donne now announced; and as it is intended to include the whole of Donne's Writings that are really valuable, it is hoped that the edition will be welcomed by the public, and found worthy of becoming a standard book in English Libraries. "The author would, especially, thus recommend_an attentive perusal of the admirable Treatise of Dr. Pye Smith on the Scripture Testimony to the Messiah; and this he the more readily does from the circumstance that that writer, though agreeing in every essential of doctrine, is yet, in discipline, unconnected with the Establishment, and may therefore, by many, be considered to exercise a freer and more unbiassed judgment."-Rev. W. D. Comy beare in Preface to Second Edit, of his Theological Lectures. Dr. Smith's Scripture Testimony is also included in the List of Works recommended to the Students in Divinity, by the Bishops of London and Oxford, Prof. Burton, &c.
