and he must not be less in earnest, but look up to God for encouragement. 39-44-Let us beware of false leaders, who seek only their own gain, and deceiving the multitude pretend to work in God's name. 45-56 The lives of leaders in all ages have given us examples of courage, tact, and selfsacrifice. 57-We are exhorted to follow in their steps.
The Need of Leaders.
The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few. Pray ye, therefore, the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest. Matthew ix, 37, 38. (R.v.)
And Micaiah said unto the king, I saw all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd: and the Lord said, These have no master; let them return every man to his house in peace. I Kings xxii, 17. (R.v.)
O ye nations, that hear and understand, look for your shepherd, he shall give you everlasting rest; for he is nigh at hand, that shall come in the end of the world. Be ready to the rewards of the kingdom, for the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore. II Esdras ii, 34, 35. (APOC.)
The True Spirit of Leadership.
Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; thy worthies are at rest; thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them. There is no assuaging of thy hurt; thy wound is grievous; all that hear the bruit of thee clap the hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

The Qualities of Leaders.
I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I; send me. Isaiah vi, 8. (R.v.)
