ceits: get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

Isaiah xxx, 8-11. (R.v.)

44.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

I John iv, 1. (A.V.)

Leaders of the Past.

45.

Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. . . . And seeing one of his brethren suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian. For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them, but they understood not. And the next day ... he would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? But he that did his neighbour

46.

This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

Acts vii, 35, 36. (A.v.)

47.

Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them. And Jethro rejoiced ... and said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians. ... Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: yea, in the thing wherein they dealt proudly against them.

When Jethro saw all that Moses

did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand about thee from morning unto even? . . . that thou doest is not good.

The thing

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people to God-ward, and bring thou the causes unto God; and thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: and let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge

Exodus xviii, 8-22. (R.v.)

48.

Elijah came to Horeb, the mount of God... and lodged in a cave; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. . . . And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way

I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also of the king's words that he had spoken And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work. But when Sanballat... heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? Then answered I them... The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

Nehemiah ii, 18-20. (R.v.)
