PREFACE.

THE following pages are not designed for the eye of the critic, but for the heart and conscience of readers generally. The origin of the work may be briefly stated thus: In the autumn of 1844 (when I was little more than fourteen years of age), the Lord was pleased to bring me to a saving knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus. In the prospect of the speedy coming and kingdom of our Lord, I was led to give myself to God, as I trust, in an everlasting covenant; and from that time I felt that I was not my own, but bought with a price, even with the precious blood of Christ," and that I ought to devote myself to the service of Him who loved me and gave himself for me. Accordingly, during the past ten years, I have occasionally employed my leisure moments in writing articles for the press, and these pages are, in part, the result. Several of the pieces have appeared at different times in religious papers, and are now offered to the public in a more permanent form; while a number of the articles do now for the first time appear in print. This work must not, therefore, be regarded as one recently written, but as being, in the main, a juvenile
