NARRATIVE, &c.

A FEW days after my arrival in GREAT BRITAIN, I was introduced, by

the respectable LADY, who first suggested to me the idea of writing this NAR

RATIVE.

She faid, the fuppofed I was a native of Great Britain.---I am, madam, faid I, and was educated in it, though now a stranger to it.---Many years ago I left it with pleasing prospects.---A tolerable fortune with good recommendations, which

the interest of my family procured for me, had filled me with the hopes of returning to it one day a merchant of confiderable confequence, (you will not be surprised that a NATIVE of the BRITISH EMPIRE fhould hold that character in high estimation, and be ambitious to attain it) but a chain of adventures and misfortunes

disappointed all my fchemes of commercial enterprise and profperity.---I have great reafon however to be thankful to Heaven for having chequered my misfortunes with many favourable circum ftances; one of which has enabled me to style myself a fubject, and not a flave, of an ASIATIC MONARCH---a PRINCE poffeffed of all the good qualities, that human nature was ever bleffed with. 495

who had the hardest fate on the occafion; for during fome days prior to it, I had been confined, with a multitude of wretched objects, in a small veffel, where I was deprived of every means of cleanliness; fo that my appearance must have been as offenfive, as it is poffible to fuppofe.-But as noble fouls are ever filled with compaffion, my ROYAL MASTER had, in the beginning of his reign, iffued a general order, that the common neceffaries of life fhould be provided for all flaves, who fhould come under his dominion, and that the officers, having charge of them, should make diligent enquiry, and regularly report to his first minifter, whether or no any of them poffeffed a knowledge of arts and sciences, by which his subjects could be benefited. :
