It is a fanning wind, whereby
I am unchaff'd of vanity. f
A furnace to refine my grace, 2
A wing to lift my foul apace; 3
Hence ftill the more I fob diftreft,
The more I fing my endless rest, 4
Mine enemies that feek my hurt,
Of all their bad defigns come fhort; 5
They serve me duly to my mind,
With favours which they ne'er defign'd. 6
The fury of my foes makes me

Faft to my peaceful refuge flee; 7
And ev'ry perfecuting elf

Does make me understand myself. 8

1 Ifa. xxvii. 7. 9. In measure when it fhooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it 1 he stayeth his rough wind in the day of his eaft-wind. By this therefore fhall the iniquity of Jacob be purged, and this is all the fruit, to take away his fin.

And he (viz. the Meffenger of the covenant) shall fit as a refiner and purifier of filver: and he fhall purify the fons of Levi, and purge them as gold and filver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. 3 Pfalm cxliii. 9. 4 2 Cor. iv. 16, 17. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light afflic tion, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

8 My fin; Ifa. xlii. 24. Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Ifrael to the rob bers? Did not the Lord, he against whom we have finned? For they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. My duty: 2 Sam. xvi. 11,12. And David said to Abithai, and to all his fervants, Behold, my fon, which came forth of my bowels, feeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? Let him alone, and let him curfe; for the Lord hath bidden him. It may be that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord will requite me good for his curfing this day. Micah vii. 8, 9. Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy when I fall, I fhall arife; when I fit in darkness, the Lord thall be a light unto me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have finned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I fhall behold his righteoufnefs. My fafety; Pfalm ix. 9, 10. The Lord alfo will be a refuge for the opprefled, a refuge in times of trouble. The Lord is known by the judgment which be executeth; the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion, Selah.

Their flanders cannot work my shame, I
Their vile reproaches raise my name; 2
In peace with Heav'n my foul can dwell,
Even when they damn me down to hell.
Their fury can't the treaty harm, 4
Their paffion does my pity warm; 5
Their madness only calms my blood; 6
By doing hurt, they do me good. 7
They are my fordid flaves I wot;

My drudges, though they know it not: 8

How fhall I curfe, whom God hath not curfed? or how fhall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied? Verse 23. Because Haman, the fon of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had advised against the Jews to deftroy them, and had caft Pur (that is, the lot) to confume them, and to deftroy them: but when Efther came before the king, he commanded by letters, that his wicked device which he devised againit the Jews, fhould return upon his own head, and that he and his fons should be hanged on the gallows.

With little kindnefs in their heart. I

For Moab is my washing-pot. 3

The Mystery of the BELIEVER'S Pardon and Security from revenging Wrath, notwithstanding bis Sin's Defert. I,Though from condemnation free,

Find fuch condemnables in me,

Ifa. x. 5, 6. O Affyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. And xlv. 1. 2 Ifa. iv. 3.-5. And it fhall come to pa's, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerufalem, fhall he called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerufalem: when the Lord thall have wathed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and fhall have purged the blood of Jerufalem from the midfl thereof, by the Spirit of judgment, and by the fpirit of burning. Moab is my wash-pot, &c.

As make more heavy wrath my due
Than falls on all the damned crew. I
But though my crimes deferve the pit,
I'm no more liable to it;
Remiffion, feal'd with blood and death,
Secures me from deserved wrath. 2
And having now a pardon free,
To hell obnoxious cannot be,
Nor to a threat, except * anent
Paternal wrath and chaftifement. 3
My foul may oft be fill'd indeed

With flavifh fear and hellifh dread: 4
This from my unbelief does fpring, 5
My faith speaks out fome better thing.
Faith fees no legal guilt again,
Though fin and its defert remain: 6.

1 Rom. viii. 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift Jefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. And vü. 18. For I know, that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is prefent with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. 1 Tim. i, 15, 16. This is a faithful faying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jefus came into the world to fave finners; of whom I am chief. Some hidden wonders hence refult;
I'm full of fin, yet free of guilt; 1
Guilt is the legal bond or knot,

That binds to wrath and vengeance hot; z
But fin may be where guilt's away,
And guilt where fin could never stay,
Guilt without any fin has been,
As in my Surety may be feen;
The elect's guilt upon him came,
Yet ftill he was the boly Lamb. 3
Sin without guilt may likewife be,
As may appear in pardon'd me:
For though my fin, alas! does ftay,
Yet pardon takes the guilt away. 4
Thus freed I am, yet ftill involv'd;
A guilty finner, yet abfolv'd: 5
Though pardon leave no guilt behind,
Yet fin's defert remains I find. 6

Even as David also describeth the bleffednefs of the man unto whom the Lord imputeth righteoufnefs without works, faying, Bleffed are they whofe iniquities are forgiven, and whole fins are covered. Bleffed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin. Pfalm li. 3, 4. For I acknowledge my tranfgreffions: and my fin is ever before me.
