7 Praise him in cheerful, grateful songs; To him your highest praise belongs! Bless him, who doth your heav'n prepare; And whom you'll praise forever there. HYMN 23. Fifth Part. L. M. We are not accepted on account of the worthiness of our faith. Y faith in Christ we're justified, 1 B Since 'tis by faith Christ is applied; But not for faith, or any thing We either suffer, do, or bring. 2 Faith is the hand, that Christ receives, HYMN 24. First Part. L. M. Our good works are no part of our righteousness before God. 1 No more, my God, I boast no more Of all the duties I have done; I quit the hopes I held before, O may my soul be found in him, 1 HYMN 24. Second Part. L. M. SELF-righteous souls on works rely, But when I lisp a song of praise, Grace is the note my soul shall raise. 2 'Twas grace that quicken'd me when dead, And grace my soul to Jesus led; Grace brings me pardon for my sin; 'Tis grace subdues my lusts within. 3 "Tis grace, that sweetens ev'ry cross, 'Tis grace supports in ev'ry loss; In Jesus' grace my soul is strong; Grace is my hope, and Christ my song. 4 'Tis grace defends when danger's near; By grace alone I persevere; 'Tis grace constrains my soul to love- 5 Thus, 'tis alone of grace I boast, For all that's past grace is my theme; For what's to come 'tis still the same. 6 Thro' endless years, of grace I'll sing, Adore and bless my heav'nly King ; I'll cast my crown before his throne, And shout free grace to him alone. HYMN 25. C. M. The Sacraments. ' 1 MY Saviour God, my sov'reign Prince, Reigns far above the skies; But brings his graces down to sense, 2 My eyes and ears shall bless his name : 3 Baptismal water is design'd To seal his cleansing grace; While at his feast of bread and wine. 4 But not the waters of a flood Can make my flesh so clean; As when my faith goes thro' the signs, 6 I love the Lord, that stoops so low, But the rich grace his hands bestow, חי 1 HYMN 26. First Part. L. M. Baptism. TWAS the commission of our Lord, Go teach the nations and baptizé : The nations have receiv'd the word 2 He sits upon th' eternal hills, And sends his cov'nant, with the seals, To bless the distant heathen lands. 3 Repent and be baptiz'd, he saith, For the remission of your sins; And thus our sense assists our faith, And shows us what his gospel means. 4 Our souls he washes in his blood, As water makes the body clean; And the good Spirit of our God Descends like purifying rain. 5 Thus we engage ourselves to thee, And seal our cov'nant with the Lord; O may the great eternal Three In heav'n our solemn vows record! HYMN 26. Second Part. C. M. Improvement of Baptism. 1 ATTEND, ye children of your God; Ye heirs of glory, hear: For accents, so divine as these, 2 Baptiz'd into your Saviour's death, With Christ your Lord, ye live anew, 3 There by his Father's side he sits, Yet owns himself your Brother still, 4 Rise from these earthly trifles, rise 5 But earth and sin will drag us down, Lord, send thy strong attractive pow'r To raise and fix us high. HYMN 27. First Part. C. M. THE Baptism is not Regeneration. HE sacraments are holy signs They 'xhibit what the Lord designs, And what his word reveals. 2 But these are not themselves the grace, 3 The sacraments were never meant They're not the truths they represent, Nor must they take their place. 4 Sinners may publicly profess, And signs and seals receive, Of what they never did possess, Or what they don't believe. 5 Man may baptize, but 'tis the Lord None but the Spirit, by his word, 6 Preserve us, Lord, from self-deceit, 7 Let none who preach the gospel hide This solemn truth from men : They may with water be baptiz'd, |
