2 Peter i. 20. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter iii. 2. That yo may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the Holy Prophets, and of the commandment of us the Apostles of the Lord and Saviour. Acts xxvi. 25. But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. Gal. v. 22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long. suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.

PREFACE. The order how the rest of the Holy Scriptures is appointed to be read.

The Old Testament is appointed for the first Lessons at Morning and Evening Prayer ; so as the most part thereof will be read over every year once, as in the Calendar is appointed.

The New Testament is appointed for the second Lessons at Morning and Evening Prayer, and shall be read over orderly every year thrice, besides the Epistles and Gospels; except the Apocalypse, out of which there are only certain Proper Lessons appointed upon divers Feasts.


MORNING PRAYER. Exhortation. Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us in sundry places to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness ;,

Rubric before the Lessons.

LITANY. That it may please thee to illuminate all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, with true knowledge and understanding of thy word; and that both by their preaching and living they may set it forth, and shew it accordingly ;. ...

That it may please thee to give to all thy people increase of grace, to hear meekly thy word, and

to receive it with pure affection, and to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit ;......

COLLECT for the Second Sunday in Advent. Blessed Lord, who hast caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning ; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy Holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.


Bishop. Do you unfeignedly believe all the Canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testament?

Answer. I do believe them.

Bish. Will you diligently read the same unto the People assembled in the Church where you shall be appointed to serve?

Ans. I will.


Bish. Are you persuaded, that the Holy Scriptures contain sufficiently all Doctrine required of necessity for eternal salvation through faith in Jesus Christ? And are you determined, out of the said Scriptures, to instruct the people committed to your charge, and to teach nothing, as that which you shall be persuaded may be concluded and proved by the Scripture?

Ans. I am so persuaded, and have so determined, by God's grace.


Archbish. Will you then faithfully exercise yourself in the same Holy Scriptures, and call upon God by prayer, for the true understanding of the same; so as you may be able by them to teach and exhort with wholesome Doctrine, and to withstand and convince the gain-sayers ?

Ans. I will so do, by the help of God.

Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for

Salvation. Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation : so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an Article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture, we do understand those Cano.

All the Books of the New Testament, as they are commonly received, we do receive and account them Canonical.


Of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament is not contrary to the New ; for both in the Old and New Testament, everlasting life is offered to mankind by Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and Man, being both God and Man. Wherefore they are not to be heard, which feign, that the old Fathers did look only for transitory promises. Although the Law given from God' by Moses, as 'touching Ceremonies and Rites, do not bind Christian men, nor the Civil Precepts thereof ought of necessity to be received in common-wealth ; yet notwithstanding, no Christian man whatsoever is free from the obedience of the commandments which are
