3 Then let the way appear
Steps unto heaven,

All that thou sendest me
In mercy given,
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

4 Then with my waking thoughts,
Bright with thy praise;
Out of my stony griefs
Altars I'll raise.
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.

5 And when on joyful wing
Cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upward I fly,

66

Still all my song shall be-
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee."

we adore, eternal Lord!

154T We praise thy name with one

accord;

Thy saints, who here thy goodness see,
Through all the world do worship Thee.

2 To thee aloud all angels cry,

And ceaseless raise their songs on high
Both Cherubin and Seraphin,

The heavens and all the powers therein.

3 The Apostles join the glorious throng;
The Prophets swell the immortal song;
The Martyrs' noble army raise
Eternal anthems to thy praise.

4 Thee, holy, holy, holy King!
Thee, Lord of Sabaoth, they sing:
Thus earth below, and heaven above,
Resound thy glory and thy love.

THOU from whom all Goodness

1550 flows,

I lift my heart to Thee;

In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,
Great God, remember me.

2 When on my fearful burden'd heart,
My sins press heavily,

My pardon speak, thy peace impart,
In love remember me.

3 If strong temptations crowd my way,
And ills I cannot flee;

O, give me strength, Lord, as my day,
For good remember me.

4 If torn with pain, disease or grief
This feeble body see;

Give patience, rest, and kind relief,
Hear, and remember me.

5 If on my face, for thy lov'd name,
Shame and reproaches be,

All hail reproach, and welcome shame,
If Thou remember me.

6 And when, at last, I sink in death, And meet thy just decree,

Then, Saviour, mark my trembling breath,
And still remember me.

156 YE

E boundless realms of joy,
Exalt your Maker's fame,
His praise your song employ
Above the starry frame;
Your voices raise,

Ye cherubim
And seraphim,
To sing His praise.

2 Thou moon, that rul'st the night,
And sun that guid'st the day;
Ye glittering stars of light,
To Him your homage pay;
His praise declare,

Ye heav'ns above,
And clouds that move
In liquid air.

3 Let them adore the Lord,
And praise His holy name,
By whose almighty word
They all from nothing came;
And all shall last

From changes free;
His firm decree

Stands ever fast.

157 WIT

WITH one consent let all the earth To God their cheerful voices raise;

Glad homage pay with awful mirth, And sing before Him songs of praise. 2 Convinc'd that He is God alone,

From whom both we and all proceed; We, whom He chooses for his own, The flock that He vouchsafes to feed. 3 O enter then his temple gate,

Thence to his courts devoutly press,
And still your grateful hymns repeat,
And still his name with praises bless.
4 For He's the Lord supremely good,
His mercy is for ever sure:

His truth, which always firmly stood,
To endless ages shall endure.

158 Our best desires fulfil;

IOU boundless source of ev'ry

2

And help us to adore thy grace,
And mark thy sov'reign will.

In all thy mercies may our souls
Thy bounteous goodness see;
Nor let the gifts thy hand imparts
Estrange our hearts from Thee.

[good!

3 In ev'ry changing scene of life,
Whate'er that scene may be;
Give us a meek and humble mind,-
A mind at peace with Thee.

4 Do Thou direct our steps aright, Help us thy name to fear;

And give us grace to watch and pray,
And strength to persevere.

5 Then may we close our eyes in death,
Free from distracting care;
For death is life, and labour rest,
If Thou art with us there.

159A when heated in the chase;

S pants the hart for cooling streams,

So longs my soul, O God, for Thee,
And thy refreshing grace.

2 For Thee, my God, the living God,
My thirsty soul doth pine:

O when shall I behold thy face,
Thou Majesty divine!

3 Why restless, why cast down, my soul? Trust God, who will employ

His aid for thee, and change these sighs
To thankful hymns of joy.

160 MY God, my Father, whilst I stray

Far from my home in life's rough way,

O teach me from my soul to say"Thy will be done. Thy will be done." 2 Though dark my path, and sad my lot, May I be still, and murmur not,

But breathe the prayer divinely taught, "Thy will be done. Thy will be done."
