3 Thou giv'st the word: the preachers rise, Their arms Hell cannot foil;

Kings with their armies are o'erthrown;
Thy Church divides the spoil.

4 Thou, Lord, the Mighty God, make strong
In us what Thou hast wrought:
To Thee, for Thy loved Temple's sake,
By kings shall gifts be brought.
5 To Thee shall Egypt's princes come,
With their assembled bands;
And Ethiopia to our God

Shall humbly stretch her hands.
60 all ye kingdoms of the earth,
Sing praises to our King!
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Loud praises ever sing!

HOU art gone in before us, Lord,

27 T Thou hast prepared a place,

That we may be where now Thou art,
And look upon thy face.

2 And ever on our earthly path
A gleam of glory lies,

A light still breaks behind the cloud
That veils Thee from our eyes.

3 Lift up our hearts, lift up our minds,
And let thy grace be given,

That while we linger yet below

Our treasure be in heaven.

4 That, where Thou art at God's right hand, Our hope, our love may be:

Dwell in us now, that we may dwell
For evermore in Thee.

28 T To mansions in the skies;
And round thy throne unceasingly
The songs of praise arise.
But we are lingering here,
With sin and care oppress'd;
Lord, send thy promised Comforter,
And lead us to our rest.

IOU art gone up on high,

2 Thou art gone up on high,

But Thou didst first come down,
Through earth's most bitter misery
To pass unto thy crown;
And girt with griefs and fears
Our onward course must be;
But only let that path of tears
Lead us at last to Thee.

3 Thou art gone up on high;
But Thou shalt come again;
With all the bright ones of the sky
Attendant in thy train.

Oh! by thy saving power,

So make us live and die,

That we may stand in that dread hour
At thy right hand on high.

29

Whitsuntide.

PIRIT of mercy, truth, and love,
O shed thine influence from above,
And still from age to age convey
The wonders of this sacred day.

2 In every clime, by every tongue,
Be God's surpassing glory sung:
Let all the listening earth be taught
The acts our great Redeemer wrought.
3 Unfailing Comfort! heavenly Guide!
Still o'er thy holy Church preside;
Still let mankind thy blessings prove;
Spirit of mercy, truth, and love.

30 SPIRIT of Truth! on this thy day, Thee for help we cry,

To guide us through the dreary way
Of dark mortality.

2 We ask not, Lord, thy cloven flame,
Or tongues of various tone;

But long thy praises to proclaim
With fervour, in our own.

3 When tongues shall cease, and power decay,

And knowledge empty prove,

Do Thou thy trembling servant stay
With faith, with hope, with love.

31 CREA

YREATOR Spirit! by whose aid
The world's foundations first were
laid,

Come, visit ev'ry humble mind,
And pour thy joy on all mankind:
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples meet for Thee.
2 Thrice holy Flame! thrice holy Fire!
Our hearts with heavenly love inspire:
Our frailty help, our vice control,
And calm the passions of the soul:
Do Thou thy sacred unction bring,
To sanctify us while we sing.
3 Immortal honor, endless fame
Attend th' Almighty Father's name;
Let God the Son be glorified,

Who for the world's redemption died;
And equal adoration be,

O blessed Comforter, to Thee.

RACIOUS Spirit! Love divine!

32 G Let thy light around us shine;

All our guilty fears remove,

Fill us with thy peace and love.
2 Pardon to the contrite give;
Bid the wounded sinner live;
Lead us to the Lamb of God;
Wash us in his precious blood.
3 Guardian Spirit, lest we stray,
Keep us in the heavenly way;
Bring us to thy courts above,
Realms of light and endless love.

33 HE

Trinity.

OLY, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be!

3 Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory
may not see,

Only Thou art holy, there is none beside
Thee,

Perfect in power, in love, and purity! 4 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea,

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

340 GOD of life, whose power benign

Doth o'er the world in mercy shine,

Accept our praise, for we are thine.
