of Pentecost.

FATHER, the SON, and the HOLY GHOST,

HYMNS.

Advent.

REAT GOD! what do I see and hear!
The end of things created:

The Judge of mankind doth appear
On clouds of glory seated:

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead, which they contained before:
Prepare, my soul, to meet Him!

2 The dead in CHRIST shall first arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding:
And meet their SAVIOUR in the skies,
With joy His throne surrounding:
No gloomy fears their souls dismay:
His presence sheds eternal day

On those prepared to meet Him. 3 But sinners, fill'd with guilty fears, Behold His wrath prevailing

For they shall rise, and find their tears
And sighs are unavailing:
The day of grace is past and gone;
Trembling they stand before the throne,
All unprepared to meet Him.

4 Great God! what do I see and hear! The end of things created:

2

The Judge of mankind doth appear
On clouds of glory seated:

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead which they contained before:
Prepare, my soul, to meet Him!

REATOR of the stars of night,
Thy people's Everlasting Light;

Jesu, Redeemer, save us all,

And hear us when to Thee we call. 2 In pity to our fallen race,

Thou in the fulness of Thy grace Didst bow the heavens on high, and come The Offspring of the Virgin's womb. 3 Majestic is Thy Glory now,

To Thee both heaven and earth must bow;
Thee things terrestrial must own,
And things celestial, Lord, alone.
4 To Thee, O Lord, to Thee we pray,
Judge of the last tremendous day;
Protect us through the unearthly fight,
With armour of celestial light.

5 To God the Father, God the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
All honour, might, and glory be,
Now and throughout Eternity.

3 DAY of wrath! O Day of mourning!

See! once more the Cross returning,

Heaven and earth in ashes burning!

2 Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth,
Through earth's sepulchres it ringeth,
All before the throne it bringeth!
3 Lo! the Book exactly worded,
Wherein all hath been recorded!
Thence shall judgment be awarded.
4 When the Judge His seat attaineth,
And each hidden deed arraigneth,-
Nothing unaveng'd remaineth.

5 King of Majesty tremendous,
Who dost free salvation send us,
Fount of Pity! then befriend us.
6 Think, kind Jesu,-my salvation
Caus'd Thy wondrous incarnation,-
Leave me not to reprobation!

7 Faint and weary, Thou hast sought me,
On the cross of suffering bought me,
Shall such grace be vainly brought me ?
8 Righteous Judge of retribution,
Grant Thy gift of absolution

Ere that reckoning-day's conclusion! 9 While the wicked are confounded, Doomed to flames of woe unbounded, Call me! with Thy saints surrounded. 10 Low I kneel, with heart-submission; See, like ashes, my contrition; Help me in my last condition!

11

Ah! that day of tears and mourning,
From the dust of earth returning.

12 Man for judgment must prepare him, Spare, O God! in mercy spare him!

13 Lord, all-pitying Jesu blest,

Grant us Thine eternal rest!

4 L

O! He comes! with elouds descending, Once for favour'd sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of his train: Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Amen.

2 Every eye shall then behold Him,
Robed in dreadful majesty ;

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced, and nail'd Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.
3 Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on thine eternal throne!
Saviour! take the power and glory;
Claim the kingdom for thine own!
Oh, come quickly!
Hallelujah! Come, Lord, come!

HA

ARK! an awful voice is sounding;
"Christ is nigh!" it seems to say;
"Cast away the works of darkness,
O ye children of the day."

2 Startled at the solemn warning,
Let the earth-bound soul arise;
Christ, our Sun, all gloom dispelling,
Shines upon the morning skies.
