"WATCH AND PRAY."

THE Occasion on which these words were uttered, was one of extreme interest. Jesus was in company with his disciples. Knowing that the time of his crucifixion was at hand, when the Shepherd was to be smitten and the sheep scattered abroad, he had instituted the simple rite of the Lord's Supper, saying to his followers, "this do in remembrance of me." They then sang a hymn, and after that, it being in the early part of the night, our Savior went out to the Mount of Olives, that he might in this hour of severe trial, gain strength by communing with God. They passed the brook of Kedron, which ran through the valley on the south-east of Jerusalem, ascended the Mount of Olives, and entered the garden of Gethsemane, which was on the western side, overlooking Jerusalem, while the moon, always full at the time of the Jewish passover, probably shone over them with mild radiance. Here Jesus came to prepare for the fearful trial which was before him.
