2 Never flinched they from the flame,

From the torture never;
Vain the foeman's sharpest aim,
Satan's best endeavor:

For by faith they saw the land
Decked in all its glory,
Where triumphant now they stand
With the victor's story.

3 Faith they had that knew not shame
Love that could not languish;
And eternal hope o'ercame
Momentary anguish.

He Who trod the self-same road,
Death and hell defeated;
Wherefore these their passions showed
Calvary repeated.

4 Up and follow, Christian men!
Press through toil and sorrow;
Spurn the night of fear, and then,
O the glorious morrow!
Who will venture on the strife?

Who will first begin it?

Who will seize the land of life?
Warriors, up and win it!

Joseph the Hymnographer (9th cent.).

2 They have come from tribulation,

And have washed their robes in blood, Washed them in the blood of Jesus; Tried they were, and firm they stood; Mocked, imprisoned, stoned, tormented, Sawn asunder, slain with sword, They have conquered death and Satan By the might of Christ the Lord.

3 Marching with Thy cross their banner, They have triumphed, following Thee the Captain of salvation,

Thee their Saviour and their King;

4

Gladly, Lord, with Thee they suffered, Gladly, Lord, with Thee they died, And by death to life immortal

They were born and glorified.

Now they reign in heavenly glory,
Now they walk in golden light,

Now they drink, as from a river,
Holy bliss and infinite;

Love and peace they taste for ever,
And all truth and knowledge see
In the beatific vision

Of the blessed Trinity.

2 Once they were mourning here below, 4 They marked the footsteps that He trod, And wet their couch with tears;

They wrestled hard, as we do now, With sins, and doubts, and fears.

His zeal inspired their breast;

And, following their incarnate God, Possess the promised rest.

3 I ask them whence their victory came; 5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise

They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, Their triumph to His death.

1 O what, if we are Christ's,
Is earthly shame or loss?
Bright shall the crown of glory be
When we have borne the cross.

2 Keen was the trial once,

Bitter the cup of woe,

When martyred saints, baptized in blood, Christ's sufferings shared below.

3 Bright is their glory now,

Boundless their joy above, Where, on the bosom of their God, They rest in perfect love.

For His own pattern given, While the long cloud of witnesses Show the same path to heaven.

Rev. Isaac Watts, 1709

4 Lord, may that grace be ours,

Like them in faith to bear
All that of sorrow, grief, or pain,
May be our portion here.

5 Enough, if Thou at last

The word of blessing give,
And let us rest beneath Thy feet,
Where saints and angels live.

6 All glory, Lord, to Thee,

Whom heaven and earth adore, To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, One God for evermore.

Rev. Sir Henry W. Baker, Bart., 1852

The following Hymns are also suitable:
77 May the grace of Christ our Saviour.
303 Through the night of doubt and sorrow.

2 Which of all our friends, to save us,
Could or would have shed their blood?
But our Jesus died to have us
Reconciled in Him to God.

This was boundless love indeed;
Jesus is a Friend in need.

3 When He lived on earth abasèd,
"Friend of sinners" was His name;
Now above all glory raised,

He rejoices in the same;

Still He calls them brethren,
friends.

And to all their wants attends.

MARSHALL S. M.

Could we bear from one another
What He daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious Friend and Brother
Loves us though we treat Him thus:
Though for good we render ill,
He accounts us brethren still.

5 O for grace our hearts to soften!
Teach us, Lord, at length to love;
We, alas! forget too often

What a Friend we have above:
But when home our souls are
brought,

We will love Thee as we ought.
