PREFACE.

THESE attempts at poetry originated in the call of friendship, and a desire to ascertain whether I could write lines in blank verse, above a mere common scribbler. If, in the opinion of friends, the issue was favorable, it was my intention to endeavour to produce something more regular and deserving of their encouragement. These first efforts were kindly received. But more important concerns, and deep personal and

relative afflictions, forced me to lay aside my intention. To gratify various, who, having felt some pleasure in reading the pieces, were desirous of their being published, I have, after hesitating two years, adventured to appear before the public. Though destitute of superior poetical abilities, I hope the kind, the useful, and liberal critics, for such there are, may lift up the light of their countenance on me; or at most, after shaking the rod at the poor delinquent, bid him go in peace and sin no more.
