To accept this public testimony of gratitude, from a man who stands indebted to your Lordship for many favours, great in themselves, but made much greater by your free and generous manner of conferring them. For they were not the effects of importunity, or the just rewards of domestic service; they sprang not from dependance, or acquaintance; being bestowed on one, who was (at the first) little known to your Lordship, otherwise than by his honest endeavours to retrieve those synodical rights of the clergy, whereof you, my Lord, have been all along, to your great honour, the avowed patron and defender.

I mention not this instance of your Lordship's goodness to me, with any view of distingutshing myself from others. For you have
