CHAP. XIX. Of the Law of God.

OD gave to Adam a law, as a covenant of works, by which he bound him and all his pofterity to perfonal entire, exact and perpetual obedience; promifed life upon the fulfilling, and threatned death upon the breach of it; and endued him with power and ability to keep it a.

III. Be

ye fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, Thou fhalt love thy nighbour as thy felf, ye do well. v. 10. For whofoever fhall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. v. 11. For he that faid, do not commit adultery; faid alfo, Do not kill. Now if thou comniit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a tranfgreffor of the law. v. 12. So fpeak ye,andfo do, as they that fhall be judged by the law of liberty. Rom. 13. 8. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another for hethatlovethanother, hath fulfilled the law. v. 9. For this, thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not fteal,Thou shalt not bear falfe witnels, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment,it is brieflyconprehended in this laying, namely, thou fhalt love thy nighbour as thy felf. Deut. 5.32. Ye fhall obferveto do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you: you fhall not turn afide to the right-hand or to the left. Deut. 10. 4. And he wrote on the tables, according to the firft writting,thetencommandments, which the Lord fpake unto you, in the mount, out of the midft of the fire, in the day of the affembly: and the Lord gave them unto me. Beside this law, commonly called moral, God was pleafed to give to the people of Ifrael, as a church under age, ceremonial laws, containing feveral typical ordinances, partly of worship, prefiguring Chrift, his graces, actions, fuf. ferings and benefits d; and partly holding forth divers inftructions of moral duties e. All which ceremonial laws are now abrogated under the new testament f.

IV. To them alfo as a body politick, he gave fundry judicial laws, which expired together with the state of that people, not obliging any other now, further than the general equity thereof may require g.

The moral law doth forever bind all, as well justified perfons as others, to the obedience thereof h; and that not only in regard of the matter contained in it, but also in respect of the authority of God the Creator who gave it i. Neither doth Chrift in the gofpel any way diffolve, but much ftrengthen, this obligation k.

VI. Although true believers be not under the law as a covenant of works, to be thereby justified or condemned 1; yet

governors, as unto them that are fent by him, for the punishmentof evil-doers, and for the praise of them that do well. Matth. 5. 17. Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to deftroy, but to fulfill. With..38. Ye have heard,that it hath been faid; Aneyefor an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:. 39. But I fay unto you, that ye. relift not evil: butwhofoever fhall fmite thee on the right cheek, turn to himthe other also. 1 Cor. 9, 8. Say I these things as a man? or faith not the law the fame alfo. v. 9. For it is written in the law of Mofes, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn: Doth God take care for oxen? v. 10. Or faith he it altogether for our fakes? for ourfakes no doubt, this is written, that he that ploweth fhouldplow in hope; and that he that threfheth in hope, thould be partaker of this hope.

is it of great ufe to them, as well as to others; in that, as a rule of life, informing them of the will of God and their duty, it directs and binds them to walk accordingly m; difcovering alfo the finful pollutions of their nature, hearts and lives n; foas, examining themselves thereby, they may come to further conviction of, humiliation for, and hatred against fin o; together with a clearer fight of the need they have of Chrift, and the perfection of his obedience p. It is likewife of ufe to the regenerate, to reftrain their corruptions;

every one that hangeth on a tree. Gal 4. 4 But when the fulness of the time was come. God fent forth his Son made of a woman, made under the law. v. 5. To redeem them that were under the law,that we might receive the adoption of fons. Acts 13. 39. And by him all that believe are juftified from all things, from the which ye could not be juftified by thelaw of Mofes, Rom. 8. 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift,cfus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit, mRom.7.12.Wherefore the law is holy; and the commandment holy, and jult, and good. 2. 22. For I delight in the law of God, after the inward man. . 25. I thank God,through Jefus Chrift our Lord. So then, with the wind, I mylelf ferve the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of fin. Pfal. 119. 4. Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently, . 5.
