This covenant of grace is frequently set forth in the scripture by the name of a testament, in reference to the death of Jesus Christ the teftator, and to the everlasting inheritance, with all things belonging to it, therein bequeathed h. / V. This covenant was differently administred in the time of the law, and in the time of the gospel i: Under the law it was administred by promises, prophefies sacrifices, circumcifion, the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all fore-signifying ✔ Chrift to come k, which were for that time fufficient and efficacious, cacious, through the operation of the spirit, to instruct and build up the elect in faith in the promifed Meffiah 1, by whom they had full remission of fins, and eternal falvation; and is called the old testament m. cendinto heaven? (thatisto bring Chrift down from above.) v. 9. Thatif thou shalt confefswith thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart, that God hath raifed him from the dead, thou shalt be faved. Gal. 3. 11. But that no man is justified by the lawin the fight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith. g Ezek. 36. 26. A new heart alfo will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.. 27. And I will put my spirit within you, and caufeyou to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them? John. 6.44. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day. v. 45. It is written in the prophets, and they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. IV. h Heb. 9. 15. And for this cause he is the Mediator of the new Testament, that by means of death for the redemption of the tranfgreffions that were under the first teftament, they which are cal led might receive the promise of eternalinheritance.v.16.Forwhere a testament is, there must also of neceffity be the death of the teftator. v. 13. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it isof no strength at all whilft the teftator lieveth. Heb. 7.22. By so much was Jesus made a furety of a better testament. Luke. 22.20. Likewise also the cup after supper saying, This cup is the new Testament, in my blood, which is shed for you. I Cor. 11. 25. After the famemanner alfo he took the cup, when he had fupped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me, V.i2 Cor.3.6. Who alsohath made us able ministers of the new teftament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth; but the fpirit giveth life. v. 7. But if the ministration of death written & engravenin stones was glorious, so that the children of Ifrael could not ftedfastly behold the face of Mofes, for the glory of his countenance, which glory was to be done away;. 8. How thall not the miniftration of the spirit be rather glorious? v. 9. For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteoutness exceed in glory. k (Heb. 8, 9, 10, Chaters.) Rom. VI. Under the gospel, when Chrift the substance n was 'exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is difpenfed are the preaching of the word, and the administration of the facraments of baptifm and the Lord's supper o, which tho' fewer 4. 11. And he received the fignof circumcifion, a feal of the righteousness of the faith, which he had yet being uncircumcifed; that he might be the Father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righteoufnels might be imputed unto them also, Coi. 2. 11. In whom also ye are circumcifed with the circumcifion made without hands, in puttingoff the body of the fins of the flesh,by the circumcifion of Christ: v. 12. Buried with him inbaptifm, wherein alfoye are risen with him, thro' the faith of the operation of God, who hath raisedhim from the dead. 1 Cor.5.7.Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is facrifised for us. 11 Cor. 10. 1: Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our Fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the fea; v. 2. And were all baptized unto Mofes inthe cloud, and in the fea; v. 3. And did all eat the same spiritualmeat; v. 4. And did all drink the fame spiritual drink: (for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock wasChrift.) Heb.11.13. These all died infaith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were perfwaded of them, and embraced them, and confefled that they were strangers & pilgrimson the earth. Which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Chrift. o Mat.28. 19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing themin the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghost: v. 20. TT pleased God, in his eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the LORDJ ESUS, his only begotten Son, to be the Mediator between God and man a; the prophet b, priest c, and king d; the head and Saviour of his churche; the heir of all things f, and judge of the world g: Unto whom uncl Seeing it is oneGod whichshall justifythe circumcifion byfaith, and uncircumcifion thro' faith. Pfal. 32.1. Bleffed is he whose tranfgrefGon is forgiven, whose sin is covered. With Rom, 4.3. For what faith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. v.6. Even as David also describeth the blesledness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness withe out works v. 16. Therefore it is of Faith, that it might be bygrace, to the end the promise might be fure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. v. 17. The Son of God, the second person in the trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the Father, did, when the fulness of time was come, take upon him man's nature k, with all the essential properties and common infirmities thereof, yet without fin 1: being conceived by the power of the holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, of her substance m. So that two whole, per will judge the world in righteoufness, by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given affurance unto all men, in that he hath raifed him from the dead. h John.17.6. In the begin ning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was Gud, v. 14. And the Word was 1 fect made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. I John 5. 20. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath givenusanunderstanding, thatwemay know him that is true: and we are in him that is true, even in his fon Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Philp. 2.6. Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Gal. 4. 4.
